A prisoner who allegedly jumped out of a moving police vehicle has claimed he had paid police officers for his freedom.

Thami Jacob Ndengezi, 31, who is accused of robbing the Emnotweni Casino of more than R1 million, was being transported from court in Nelspruit to Pretoria Central Prison when he made his alleged daring escape on May 25.

Ndengezi was arrested in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, yesterday. He then told the police that he never escaped from a moving vehicle but had paid policemen money to help him escape.

Ndengezi and several other men were initially arrested in connection with a robbery at the First National Bank branch in Modimolle, Limpopo.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
