The protection of children and babies in prisons was the focal point of this year's Child Protection Week, Correctional Services said on Monday.
Spokesperson Sarie Peens said correctional services had used Child Protection Week to focus on mobilising government and other sectors to address the plight of child offenders and of babies of incarcerated mothers.
As part of this initiative, national commissioner of Correctional Services Xoliswa Sibeko established a crèche and donated educational toys and clothes to children at the Thohoyandou Female Correctional Centre in Limpopo on Saturday.
As at 31 March, there were 840 sentenced children, 788 awaiting trial children and 184 babies in correctional facilities.
"The statistics indicate the magnitude of the problem confronting the department in addressing the plight of children in our facilities," the department said.
