Pretoria - A 23-year-old University of Pretoria student was kidnapped and taken to Mamelodi East before being rescued on Friday, police said.
Captain Colette Weilbach said the student was approached by a man he thought was a car guard as he was unlocking his vehicle on the corner of Hilda and Prospect streets in Hatfield at 03:30.
"Before he could get into his vehicle, three men took him by surprise. He tried to fight them off and saw that one of them had a firearm.
"They forced him into the back of the vehicle and drove off," she said.
They later stopped the car and forced him into the boot.
"Fortunately the suspects did not take his cellphone... he phoned his father and informed him of the incident. The father alerted the police who immediately started to follow up leads."
The men drove to an informal settlement in Mamelodi East, where they took the student into a back room, tied him up and assaulted him.
They took his wallet and cellphone before leaving.
The police arrived on the scene, recovered the stolen silver Volkswagen Polo and found the student tied up in the back room.
Police were investigating a case of armed robbery, kidnapping and theft case. No arrests had been made.
