The DA has called on Minister of Transport Sbusiso Ndebele to investigate what it called unnecessary expenditure by rail agency Prasa during its Women's Day celebration in August.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa spent R584 810.92 during the Soweto function which did not benefit commuters, said DA shadow deputy minister of transport, Manny de Freitas in a statement on Thursday.
He said R345 000 was spent on catering and R37 500 on welcoming drinks.
The party's wasteful expenditure monitor currently stood at R570-million,
he said.
"Commuters have benefited in absolute no way from the event. This is an unacceptable state of affairs, particularly given that the quality of services provided by Prasa continues to deteriorate at an alarming rate."
The DA intended asking Ndebele to intervene and stop the wasteful expenditure. Prasa's spokesman Sbusiso Ngomane was not immediately available to comment.
