PRETORIA. Reports that a luxury sedan belonging to ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema was broken into have thrown the organization into disarray. According to ANCYL insiders, the discovery that Malema drives a Mercedes and not a traditional BMW has left cadres feeling betrayed, and many are calling for Malema to be disciplined for breaking ranks with the brand.

The incident was reported in various local media last week, with police confirming that Malema's C-Class Mercedes had been broken into and that a handbag containing a passport, identity documents and bank cards had been stolen.

They refused to comment on whether or not the stolen handbag had also contained a powder puff, breath spray, Vaseline, a shriveled monkey's hand commonly used as muti for eliminating enemies, and a rubber bracelet engraved with the motto 'What Would Msholozi Do?'

Incensed ANCYL members say they were "gutted" to learn of the Mercedes betrayal through the media.

According to Tetanus Zwane, the League's Deputy Treasurer and interim Head of Book-Burning, the revelation about Malema's choice of car has shaken cadres to the core.

Speaking to journalists this morning at the Johannesburg offices of the ANCYL, in the nap room of Gogo Bokotso's Happytime Daycare Centre, he said that the new, post-Polokwane ANC was built on two "unshakable pillars".

"One: an endless stream of tax revenue wrung from the bulging pockets of the counterrevolutionaries. And two: vehicles built by the Bavarian Motor Works."

Zwane said that without tax money and BMWs, the ANC was "nothing but a collection of very good-looking intellectuals".

However he was quick to reassure ANCYL members that there was no crisis of leadership in the movement.

"Comrade Malema has erred, but we still believe in democracy, and as democrats we hope that he will continue to lead us into the future, enforcing democracy and dictating democratic processes, perhaps with military help if the voters wish it so, for many decades to come."

He said that Malema was a "brilliant but humble scholar of ANC history" and would be acutely aware that driving a Mercedes instead of a BMW went against the founding principles of the liberation movement.

"We know that he is sorry," said Zwane. "He has assured as that it won't happen again, and as we speak he is returning to grass-roots level by applying to the Treasury for a new 7-series BMW."
