At least nine people have been arrested in connection with an alleged multi-million rand South African Airways air-miles fraud in a protracted investigation being carried out by the Scorpions and the South African Police Service.

The investigation began in 2006 in a bid to curb the theft of air-miles from premium customers for what was understood to be use by non-paying travellers on the notorious South Africa-Brazil drug route.

Although details of the three SAPS arrests are sketchy, Scorpions spokesperson Tlali Tlali confirmed that six arrests were made by the Directorate of Special Operations (Scorpions) in Gauteng on April 28 and 29 this year.

One of the women arrested, Thobeka Malinga, an SAA employee, died in police custody.

SAA staff member Dongani Sithole and another woman, Sharon Zana, arrested along with Malinga, have appeared in court. Their case was postponed to January 22, 2009.

Contrary to weekend media reports (see links below), acting National Prosecuting Authority head Mokotedi Mpshe has confirmed meanwhile that South African Airways CEO Khaya Ngqula "was not and is not under investigation".
