South Africa is becoming a banana republic under the "new clique" in the African National Congress (ANC), United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa said on Tuesday.

Holomisa, speaking at a UDM election rally in Zimbane village outside Mthatha, said it was easy to see how the ANC would operate if it came to power.

"They are rushing laws through Parliament, undermining democratic institutions and releasing criminals convicted of serious crimes simply because they are aligned to the ruling clique," Holomisa said in a speech released to Sapa.

"This gives us an idea of where we are heading if this clique comes into power. We're heading one way and that's a banana republic. The voters must stop this one-party dominance. It only breeds arrogance."

Holomisa criticises Shabir Shaik's early release

Holomisa criticised the release of convicted fraudster, Shabir Shaik. Holomisa urged voters to be careful when casting their votes in this year's general elections.

Holomisa accused the ruling party of continuously undermining the country's judiciary. He urged voters to be extra careful with regard to who they put into power to defend democracy. He says the release of Shabir Shaik from prison should not surprise people, saying the ANC will continue to undermine State institutions for as long as it is in power.

"The people of South Africa have been witnessing the ruling party's campaign to undermine the institutions of this country including the judiciary. Yes, we witnessed how they attacked Judge Squires and called him names because he gave a verdict which was not acceptable in the palace. They disbanded the Scorpions. They recalled Mbeki so that they can have Motlanthe, whose aim was to make sure that they implement this despicable decision.

"Shaik was released today on medical grounds after serving almost two years of a 15-year sentence for fraud and corruption.
