The couple were forced into the boot of their car and driven to an isolated spot where they were terrorised for several hours. The mother of the 21-year-old who was attacked said she decided to speak out about her son and his girlfriend’s “nightmare ordeal” to warn others of the “overwhelming danger” at some of Nelson Mandela Bay’s public spaces – and to clear up misleading media reports. “I don’t want this to happen to anyone, ever,” the tearful mother said yesterday. “Our beautiful children’s lives have been changed in an instant and will never be the same again. As a family, we are devastated.” She said the two were packing up at sunset when two men came “out of nowhere” and held them at gunpoint. Two more men appeared to be waiting at the site they were later taken to. The mother said the thugs made the couple throw out their picnic gear and shoved them into the boot of the hatchback. They were then “taken off the beaten track” to a secluded spot down a gravel road off the main road, where they were tied up. Two of the assailants left at one stage to draw R150 from the girl’s bank account – R150 was her daily limit. A source close to the investigation, who asked not to be named, said the money was withdrawn from an ATM in Rink Street, Central. “Most banks have CCTV surveillance and police are investigating to see if there is any evidence from this,” the source said. When the two attackers returned, all four of the men bombarded the couple with hate speech, put a gun to the man’s head and assaulted them. The four then left in her son’s car, the mother said. Fearing they would return, “my son decided they had to escape”. The couple managed to free themselves from their restraints and leopard-crawled through the sand dunes before reaching the shoreline. The brother of the young man said: “They ran for about 45 minutes along the coastline until they reached the Noordhoek Skiboat Club, where a party was being held. The mother said it was “an absolute miracle” her son and his girlfriend’s lives were spared, but wanted to know why there had not been more media reports of similar incidents that had happened along this stretch of coast. “What happens if the next attack results in a fatality? “The public have a right to know what is going on. Are they (police and media) keeping incidents under wraps because of 2010 (Fifa World Cup) and tourism,” asked the shattered woman. She urged other parents to warn their children of the dangers. “They have to be careful. We need to speak to our children about going to public places that we should all be able to visit, but that are dangerous.” In an e-mail sent to friends and colleagues, the brother of the man who was hijacked gave more details of the horror attack. “My younger brother and his girlfriend were hijacked at gunpoint by four (men) in the Willows area and forced into the boot of my brother’s Polo hatch-back. “They were driven to a deserted stretch of bush and sand dunes,” he said. “There, their attackers bombarded the two with hate speech, but also put a gun to my brother’s head and demanded cash.” He said the men were apparently foreigners from West Africa. “They (tied them up), gagged them and drove off in their car.” He described further how the two then managed to untie themselves. “They leopard- crawled through the sand dunes and reached the shoreline and proceeded to run for about 45 minutes until they reached the Noordhoek boat club.” “Luckily for them they managed to get assistance from a group of people who were having a party there. “It was then I received a phone call that has shattered both families. “My brother has to free himself of the feeling of helplessness he is experiencing, and (they have to deal with) the sheer shock both of them would have experienced throughout their ordeal.” He said the incident had crushed a lot of spirits and it would take a lot of faith to lift his devastated brother and his partner out of this misery. “No one should have to go through what the two of them endured. When people are forced to steer clear of areas every living being should have free and equal rights to frequent, there is something seriously wrong with society.” Another man, who had stopped to watch some fishing boats, was also hijacked and tied up on the same night, allegedly by the same thugs.

Corrective rape’ and murder of gay rights activist points to a new apartheid

Across South Africa a rising tide of rape and violence is being used to suppress lesbian women. Following her retirement from playing, she coached four teams in her home township of Kwa-Thema, 45 miles southeast of Johannesburg, and was qualifying to become her country's first professional woman referee. Simelane was one of the first South African women to live openly as a lesbian and had become a celebrity gay rights activist. For this, she paid with her life. The prosecution's case against five men charged with gang raping, torturing and murdering Simelane, in what has been described as a "corrective rape" assault, ended on Friday. The defence begins its case on August 26. Corrective rape - in a country where more generalised rape is virtually out of control, with one-in-four women having been violated by the age of 16 - is a form of punishment inflicted on lesbians to "cure" them of their sexual orientation. In South Africa no woman is safe from violence," said a coalition of women's rights organisations in a report on rape co-ordinated by the non-governmental organisation ActionAid South Africa. "The country's war against its women continues unabated, with an estimated half a million rapes, hundreds of murders and countless beatings inflicted every year. For every 25 men prosecuted for rape in South Africa, 24 walk free." The most prominent man to be acquitted was President Jacob Zuma, tried in 2006 for the rape of an HIV-positive woman. Zuma said in his defence that the woman was wearing a loose skirt and that "in Zulu culture you cannot leave a woman if she is ready". Zuma's supporters outside the court chanted: "Burn the bitch." Zuma was acquitted and his accuser fled into exile in The Netherlands. Before his trial Zuma denounced gays as "a disgrace to the nation and God". So guarded is the Zuma ANC government about epidemic sexual violence and the growth of "corrective rape" that it moved the trial of Eudy Simelane, who was 31 when she was murdered last year, to a small country town, Delmas, about 70 miles east of Johannesburg, to avoid publicity. The ploy has worked. The penniless and often lazy South African media have virtually ignored what the worldwide gay community and many human rights organisations regard as a landmark trial. Domestic and international human rights activists have supplied foreign journalists with reports of the trial's progress. The irony is that the apartheid government in the 1980s and early 1990s also moved trials of anti-apartheid activists to Delmas to avoid publicity. By the time the prosecution rested its case many facts had been established. Five youths in their 20s attacked Simelane, attempted to rape her to make her a "real woman", stabbed her 25 times and left her semi-naked body face down in a ditch just 200 yards from the home where she lived with her parents. Three of the youths have pleaded not guilty and one turned state witness. The fifth youth pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 32 years' imprisonment. It is a reminder of the struggles faced by those who survived death and who continue to live in fear for their lives. "Eudy's openness makes her brutal murder all the more disheartening," said a Triangle spokeswoman. Mpho Skosana, Simelane's 24-year-old male cousin who grew up with the victim, said: "She was strong; she would have fought back. So, to me, you don't rape a woman like that unless you want to mark that person, saying, That's a woman I want to teach something'." Throughout the trial so far, some 200 people have maintained vigil outside the Delmas court, brandishing posters saying "Eudy, we'll never forget" and "Women's rights are human rights". The Simelane trial is an important test case for the country's newly appointed police chief Bheki Cele, a close Zulu friend of Zuma. He has no experience as a policeman and is better known for his flamboyant all-white suits accompanied by white fedoras and shoes. He has previously said that he believes policemen have a right to "shoot to kill". Among the many corrective rapes for which no men have been brought to trial were the killings in Soweto of lesbian couple and prominent gay activists Sizakele Sigasa, 34, and Salome Masooa, 23. Sigasa was shot six times in her head and collarbone and her underpants were tied round her throat. Masooa was shot through the back of her head. Gay rights organisations said the killings were driven by "lesbo-phobia". Zaneli Muholi, a community relations officer with a gay rights organisation, said: "It is being both black and gay that is problematic. "Rape and violence against lesbians is common. The problem is largely that of patriarchy. The men who perpetrate such crimes see rape as curative and as an attempt to show women their place in society." Gays and lesbians theoretically have constitutional protection in South Africa. Elsewhere in black Africa being gay is considered un-African, un-Christian, anti-family and a product of witchcraft. "This is not part of our tradition; this is crime," said Mbulelo Dyasi of Masimanyane, a women's support centre in East London. The widespread myth holds that when the young men emerge from the initiation schools, they should first have sex with women who are not their partners. This is done to clean the penis and test if it is working, according to Dyasi. Men are being taught that this practice is part of traditional culture. But Dyasi said an investigation found that the myth only began circulating in the 1980s. The young initiates would have sex with new partners seen to be of "lesser value" in the community, said Eland. This included women who had previously had many sexual partners, increasing the young initiate's risk of exposure to HIV. The use of condoms was not encouraged. The myth came to the attention of Masimanyane when it emerged that some young initiates were raping women, said Dyasi. They joined gangs, whose members encouraged them to rape as a form of good luck after the circumcision. Dyasi cited one incident during which a pregnant mother was raped by nine men. "This is crime, and not part of our tradition," he said. The distorted teaching has been brought to the attention of the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders, which is now revising the guidelines for initiation schools. The new curriculum guidelines will be released by December. In his Youth Day address, ANC Youth League President Julius Malema called on the youth of South Africa to practise monogamy. But a league spokeswoman refused to confirm that this applied to rituals at initiation schools. "What happens in initiation schools remains the business of the initiation school. It is a cultural practice," said Magdalene Moonsamy.

Armed with a spear, a gun and a knife, they assaulted the 57-year-old guardian for an hour before gang-raping a teenage girl. Police are investigating the horrific attack, which happened at the Mthatha SOS Children’s Village home . The woman and the girl were fast asleep, together with other children who are between the ages of 12 and seven years old, in the house. “It was around midnight when I heard something banging the main door twice,” said the woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the rape victim. “I woke up to investigate only to find that strangers were already inside. I shouted for help but they grabbed me and took me to my bedroom while one had a gun pointed at me.” The guardian said in the bedroom the four, who she estimated were all in their 20s, kept on demanding money. The criminals noticed a safe in the guardian’s bedroom and demanded that she open it. They took a camera, which was inside the safe. As she repeatedly told them she had no money in the house, they assaulted her. “I told them that I used the only money we had to buy groceries, but they hit me and stabbed me with a spear on the head. “I gave them some money that I had in the bedroom. “They demanded more money and pushed the gun against my nose and threatened to shoot me,” said the guardian. She said the more she denied having money, the more the criminals assaulted her, even jumping on top of her repeatedly. She then gave in and handed them all she had, about R700. They also took her cellphone. The thugs pushed girls’ underwear into her mouth to stop her from screaming and tied her hands with an electric cord. They also ransacked the house for valuables. “Then three of them went to the girls’ bedroom, while the other stayed behind to make sure I did not call for help,” she said. The rape victim, who is in Grade 10 at the SOS school, said she was roughly awakened by the men who demanded a cellphone and money. She gave them R40 and said she did not have a phone. “They demanded that I must undress. They grabbed hold of me and tried to undress me, but I pushed them away. They hit me with an open hand across the face repeatedly. They also hit me with the spear twice on the face,” said the rape victim, who moved into the SOS Children’s Village in 2007, after the death of her parents. Then one of the men held her hands tight while another one closed her mouth with both his hands. The third man cut her underwear off with his knife. Then they took turns raping her. After they had finished, one of them ordered another 12-year-old girl to undress. She was saved when another of the intruders said she was too young. When they left the house, the criminals took all the monthly groceries . Captain Zamukulungisa Jozana said police were investigating all leads. SOS Children’s Village shelters more than 100 young children from babies to 18 year olds.
