The Trouble With Blacks

Make no mistake, an issue it is, as the recent rioting across Britain proves. Look at the areas affected. Look at the instigators. Look at the feral aggression. Look at the jewelry, the designer goods, the cell-phone and sneaker stores looted. Look at the faces of those arrested. I think the demographic—in spite of reflexive attempts by broadcasters and the liberal left to play it down—is pretty clear. The majority of thugs out on the street are black. Quelle surprise. Oh yes, there will be the platitudes and excuses, the talk of poverty and deprivation and disenchantment and social exclusion. As one rioter put it: “We is protestin’ by thievin’.” And it is all utter bullshit. Yet you will never find a politician or self-appointed community leader with the balls and bottle to say it as it is, to break the taboo, to speak it out aloud. So let me spell it out for everyone — THE BLACKS HAVE A PROBLEM. Only they would tell you that raw criminality is somehow a political act of defiance. Only they could shift the cause for their pillaging and arson to the system that apparently invites it—after all, a department store can seem so bright and shiny and provoking. Sure, many Afro-Caribbean citizens are law-abiding, but many also—including a vast percentage of young black males—are not. Check the statistics. Indeed, blacks carry out the majority of London street crime and two-thirds of firearms offenses. And the excuses come thick and fast. Few play the blame game or point-the-finger exercise quite so avidly as the black community. Few have evolved such an advanced culture of victimhood from which their overdeveloped sense of grievance and entitlement has grown. They have the same education and opportunity as anyone else, but—oh no—they are special, are downtrodden, are misunderstood. We must atone and respect (or “respek”) them because they exist. Because of their gangsta rap. Because their young men wear hoods or carry knives or manage to walk in a menacing pimp roll. Funny, I always thought respect had to be earned. How white, outmoded, and middle-class of me. Pervading all is the attitude that it is not their fault and never ever their responsibility. Should a young black be excluded from school, it is not because he is lazy, disruptive, or stupid, but because the education system is against him. Should the police stop him, it is not because he acts suspiciously or his kind commits most robberies, but because the police are inherently racist. Should he fail to gain a job, it is absolutely the employer’s fault and not because the applicant was sullen, lippy, and barely house-trained. So it goes on. And on and on. Complaint rather than effort and attainment has become the cultural norm. The liberal apologists are ever there to explain away and facilitate the mindset. Just like Muslims who will not accept jihadi extremists draw on the Islamic faith or environmentalists who cannot admit population growth is a key root of global warming, so few in the black community—even when the evidence is plain, even when the police run Operation Trident directly to tackle black gun crime—will put up their hands and say with honesty: “We have a problem and it is our own fault and our responsibility.” To utter such words would be construed as heresy, would be to stray from the adopted liberal-left consensus that every ill, every crime, every mishap within the black community is due to slavery and oppression by the whites. No matter slavery in Britain was abolished in 1833—we must still suffer the rage and allow plasma-screen televisions and top-of-the-range footwear to be looted from a burning store. Welfare has institutionalized the belief in something-for-nothing, the attitude that the state will provide and pick up the pieces, the bill, and the broken glass and replace work and absent fathers with ready cash and immediate housing. No point in parenting when someone else will do it for you. It is fine to smash a shop front when insurance or the taxpayer will help the owners restock. It is fine to ruin a livelihood when you have no concept of earning. It is fine to take something that is not yours when it is on display and your gut and jungle logic tells you to possess it. This is what the sixty-year experiment in state handouts has achieved. The work is available if the indigenous black population seeks it. Indeed, Britain brings in tens of thousands of Gambians and Ghanaians and other migrants to staff hospitals and care homes and fill a “labor shortage” that does not exist. In accepting that Afro-Caribbeans have not needed to work, we have entrenched them in their postcode gangs and their ghetto. Softly, softly, the police and social services have gone. Regard the situation. Education used to be the way up and the way out. No more. A generation of blacks feels no need, does not see the point, has no fathers or family to kick their backsides and tell them to strive. After all, it is so much easier to smoke ganja, to shoplift, to snatch a purse or bag, to hold a knife to a throat and rape a “bitch.” If all they are told is that they are the victims, the Earth’s rightful inheritors, and that cash can be generated without much effort, then they will follow their peers and the path of least resistance. The young offender institutions are full of them. Certainly there are doctors and lawyers and accountants in the black community, but they are few and scattered, and their middle class lacks depth and robustness. The knock-on is lack of aspiration. What is left is a misplaced emphasis on street culture and the Afro-Caribbean way. Forgive me, but if what I had brought to British life was goat curry, carnival floats, crack cocaine, violence, and hip-hop, I would not be that proud. There are good people out there, people who strive and struggle and do their best. But they are undermined by both white and black apologists, by acceptance of indiscipline and of felony as occupational right, by a conspiracy of silence that prevents open debate. I have not heard a single BBC reporter say the word “black.” The situation would be absurd were it not so serious and the problems so deep. The black American comedian Chris Rock once declared: “On one side, there’s black people. On the other, you’ve got niggers. The niggers have got to go. I love black people, but I hate niggers.” If the Afro-Caribbeans in London do not themselves confront and address the embedded flaws in their outlook and society, such things will be said with hatred and not laughter. As for future riots—and they will come—the political class will continue to talk soothingly of “British” policing when all we really require is effective policing. Personally, I did not vote to allow London to become Jamaica’s brutal cockpit. I will thus be leaving my front door wide open and scattering a trail of glittering objects and designer wares to entice the raiders to my home. And I will be waiting for them. Farm couple attacked by three black men

Serfontein was injured while fighting with the men in an attempt to save her life. He was bashed over the head with an iron bar and sustained heavy bruising across his body as well as an injured hand and arm. He was treated at a local hospital. The Volksblad report does not describe how the couple were rescued and whether anything was stolen at all.

Business owner stabbed and stoned to death

He had stepped from his Peugeot 407 to open the entrance gate to the homestead when he was killed. He was stabbed in his arm and his chest; as well as hit with stones on his head and died on the scene. The assailants fled with an unknown amount of cash and the man's Peugeot vehicle. The car was later found overturned on a road in Bloemspruit. The attackers had fled on foot by the time police got there. No arrests have been made.Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer Warrant Officer Michael Kortman from the Organised Crime Unit in Bloemfontein at 082-554-2729.

Making their way to Van Zyl’s bedroom at the back of the house, the suspects waited outside before they smashed the window, overpowered Van Zyl and then shot him in the head at point-blank range. Blood smears across the walls, torn curtains, overturned furniture and smashed belongings bore testimony to the struggle between Van Zyl and his attackers. The blood-soaked mattress showed where Van Zyl had lain as his attackers carried out his possessions. A distraught Pretorius yesterday said: “As I came around the corner I saw chaos. There were appliances lying in the garden and glass outside the bedroom window.” he said. Cautiously walking around outside the house, fearing that the attackers were still on the property, Pretorius spotted his nephew through the smashed bedroom window. “I could not believe it. I thought he was dead. There was so much blood. I have never seen that much blood before.” Climbing through the window, Pretorius was shocked when Van Zyl began to talk to him, pleading for help. “I get sick when I think of how I found him and think about how he lay there for hours in all that blood and pain calling for help,” said Pretorius. A case of house robbery and attempted murder was being investigated. Several things, including a cellphone, were stolen.

Anni Dewani, 28, and hubby Shrien, 31, had just left a restaurant with a driver in a VW Sharan when they were hijacked by two gunmen. The driver was bundled out of the vehicle, which then drove off at speed with the newlyweds inside. An hour later — around 11 miles away — the killers stopped and threw Mr Dewani from the vehicle. He raised the alarm by flagging down a passing motorist. A police patrol later spotted the Sharan abandoned two miles away in the township of Khayelitsha near Cape Town. The blood-soaked body of Mrs Dewani was found on the back seat. She was covered in bruises and is feared to have been raped. Locals told police they had heard shots. It is believed she was hit in the head, but other reports last night said she may have been stabbed. How many Blacks died under Apartheid?

BY Vusile Tshabalala (a black journalist) At the start of the year 1900, the number of (Black) African South Africans was found to be 3,5-million according to the British colonial government census. By 1954, our (Black) African population had soared to 8,5-million — and by 1990, there were a full 35-million of us — all carefully managed, closely policed, counted, shunted around in homelands and townships — and all of us chafing and griping under the suppressive yoke of the Afrikaner Broederbond’s rigid racial segregation system. During apartheid, our (black) population grew apace however because we also had the benefit of the Broers’ medical knowledge and their excellent agricultural skills. Our population growth and our average life expectancy in fact showed us (black)Africans in South Africa to be in better than average health when compared to other Africans on the rest of the continent: in the decades prior to the official policy of apartheid, (which was started in 1948), the average life expectancy of black African South Africans was only 38 years. However, during the last decade of the apartheid era from 1948 to 1994, our average life expectancy had risen to 64 years — on a par with Europe’s average life expectancy. Moreover, our infant death rates had by then also been reduced from 174 to 55 infant deaths per thousand, higher than Europe’s, but considerably lower than the rest of the African continent’s. And the (black) African population in South Africa had by then also increased by 50% percent. Deaths due to political violence during Apartheid - from 1948 - 1994Max Coleman’s authoritative book analyses all deaths due to political violence from 1948 to 1994 in South Africa and Namibia. According to the HRC statistics, 21,000 people died in political violence in South Africa during apartheid – of whom 14,000 people died during the six-year transition process from 1990 to 1994. The book lists the number of incidents, dates, and those involved. This includes SA Defence Force actions, for instance the 600 deaths at Kassinga in Angola during the war in 1978. Of those deaths, the vast majority, 92%, have been primarily due to (blacks) Africans killing (blacks) Africans — such as the inter-tribal battles for territory: this book’s detailed analyses of the period June 1990 to July 1993 indicates a total of 8580 (92%) of the 9,325 violent deaths during the period June 1990 to July 1993 were caused by Africans killing Africans, or as the news media often calls it, “Black on Black” violence – hostel killings, Inkatha Freedom Party versus ANC killlings, and taxi and turf war violence. The activities of the Civil Cooperation Bureau as outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, were also included in these figures. One entry, emailed to football fans around the world, calls for the “rape and slaughter” of whites and the murder of President Jacob Zuma. In a chilling message a Malema “fan” called Thato Mbateti Mbateti warns: “Every trespasser, namely white whores, we will rape them and kill them… White kids will be burned.” The Facebook page, which attracted more than 15,000 followers, has been shut down. Malema and the ANCYL insisted it was not an official supporters’ page. Lawrence Schlemmer, vice president of the South African Institute of Race Relations, said: “There is no reason why these things, as tragic as they are, should affect the safety of fans or players at the World Cup. AWB spokesman Andre Visagie said: “The death of Mr Terre’Blanche is a declaration of war by the black community of South Africa to the white community that has been killed for 10 years on end. “They attacked him in such a way it was difficult to recognise the face of Eugene Terre’Blanche. “We will decide upon the action we are going to take to avenge Mr Terre’Blanche’s death.” AWB’s supporters have blamed African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema, who caused outrage by recently singing an anti-white song called Kill The Boers. But the ANCYL denied that Malema’s singing, ruled illegal by a South African court, had anything to do with Terre’Blanche’s killing. Malema, 29, has already vowed to continue with the inflammatory songs, adding: “We are not going to stop. We are prepared to go to jail and get arrested again.” The ruling African National Congress last night tried to play down claims of a civil war. ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said: “The black community has never declared war on any other nationality in South Africa.” South African President Jacob Zuma, 67, called for both sides to remain calm as he desperately tried to prevent an explosion of violence. FIFA would be left with a “total nightmare” if civil war erupts and means the tournament cannot be played in the country this summer. With only 10 weeks to go, football’s world governing body would almost certainly not have time to reschedule the World Cup for this year. Two years ago, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, 74, admitted there was a contingency plan in place, should South Africa not be ready in time. ANC Fiddles over Malema while South Africa Burns

Spokesman Ishmael Mnisi said on Wednesday that the party was always in touch with the league, but had not decided whether to talk to Malema about this particular matter. In layman's terms the ruling party that forms the government that is in charge of all South Africans can't decide whether racist attacks on certain of their citizens needs to be dealt with by them. Perhaps at the next election they may wish to clarify before the vote that if the ANC are elected as the next government then they see their role as strictly overseeing the needs and requirements of the ANC membership. This in turn will mean that the remaining 45 odd million South Africans are going to need a separate government to deal with their issues. Pursuant to a declaration along those lines the ANC will be more than welcome to focus on purely party matters from what will then be fewer seats than those currently held by the ID. In the meanwhile, as they are the government and ruling party in charge of all South Africans - while clearly in desperate need of a few tutorials on what distinguishes a constitutional democracy like South Africa from the anarchy that is Somalia - perhaps they might want to consider what the implications are going to be if everyone starts behaving like Malema and certain other leaders. He is after all a role model to the masses. If every interest group that goes to make up the aggregate of what we consider our masses starts calling for violence and resorts to name calling against the ANC or the government every time it feels so inclined what will be the response? As things stand you can't even scratch your ear with your middle finger if the President's convoy is passing by in case you get picked up, have a brown bag put over your head and interrogated to see that you aren't endangering our leader. Yet when the leader of one of the biggest groups in the country - the ANCYL - calls the leader of the opposition a Satanist and the head of the ID a woman that no normal man could marry the ANC can't work out whether to deal with it or not. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. When Malema called for white people to be shot and accused them of being rapists somewhere, somehow, someone surely asked the question of how much longer this is going to be allowed to carry on before it turns on those who don't deal with it. For example if, once again, other groups followed the youth league president's fine lead and called upon their followers to shoot other races would the government expect the police to have to go in and arrest them and if so how would they be able to distinguish it from Malema's case without arresting him? Or is Malema simply above the law? As we saw earlier today the police are changing to military ranks to try and instill discipline. That's nonsense. You fight corruption and crime by setting examples at the top and clamping down on slackness at the bottom. The same way that you ensure that a culture of lawlessness does not arise by giving example after example of leaders and politicians who disregard the rule of law as if it is some kind of irritant. A disregard which seems to permeate every level of our society. What is going to happen when South African society, using our leaders as their example, start disregarding the laws that they consider inappropriate to themselves? Is the government going to try another do as I say not as I do number? At that point in time the very system that maintains law and order will, as a result of their own conduct, become ineffective in dealing with the society that it is meant to regulate and the people who are responsible for undermining it by gross disregard, will be the ones calling out the military. In a country where so much anger exists over the perceived failure of service delivery coupled to a culture of violence that arises from way back when the last thing that anyone would expect is that those in charge of the country do anything to jeopardize a criminal justice system which they may well need in the not too distant future.

They then killed her mother, Marinda O’Dell, 48. Police found one of the murderers hiding in the roof of the house. Another man was arrested a few hours after the murder in the nearby Munsieville. Alicia had arrived home shortly after 14:00. She first spoke to people who were at the house for after-hours occupational therapy sessions with her mother, before she went into the house. Shortly afterwards, she was overpowered in her bedroom, assaulted and choked, said police. She lost consciousness and collapsed on the floor. Her mother arrived at the house shortly afterwards. She had just dropped off children from Lantern School, a school for children with special educational needs where she worked, at home. O’Dell invited the clients into her office before she went looking for her daughter. She presumably became suspicious when Alicia didn’t respond to her calls. She was apparently calling a friend to hear whether she knew where Alicia was when she was overpowered and murdered. Her body was found in the main bedroom. It was still unclear how the clients, a woman and her child, had survived the attack. Marinda’s husband, Henry O’Dell, was in Durban at the time of the murder and flew back home on Wednesday night. The men who were arrested, were 27 and 28 years old.

The muscles behind his eyes were damaged and specialists aren't sure whether the muscles will recover sufficiently for him to have normal vision again. Warren said her parents were severely traumatised and receiving counselling. No arrests have been made and Warren accused the police of dragging their feet. Pretorius, speaking from the Emfuleni Medi-Clinic in Vanderbijlpark, said on Monday evening that since the attack almost six days ago, police had not interviewed him about what had happened. "They only spoke to my wife. No one has been to ask me any questions," he said. Warren said people in the building where the attack had taken place and who saw the attackers before and after the incident had also not been approached by police in a bid to gather any evidence. "This is appalling," she added. Captain Shado Mashobane of the Vereeniging police station confirmed that no arrests had been made, but said the investigation was underway. The attackers then dragged his brother a further 20m to a river bank and left him there in the bushes before they fled. He was wearing only his underpants. Deon says one of his farm workers disappeared after the incident. This worker's brother is a former employee of Deon. Both men are from Zimbabwe. According to Deon, he sacked the one brother a few months ago because he'd been causing trouble. "Two months ago, that worker phoned me and said: 'I'll show you what I can do with a white man.' I asked him what he wanted, and he replied he wanted R600 from me. "I gave the R600 to his brother to give to him. I also asked the brother to get my cellphone back, which the other brother took when he left, but it was never returned." Gawie's murderers fled with his revolver, two radios, two cellphones and about R1 000. On Sunday Deon expressed his dismay that the police did not take fingerprints at the scene. They also did not take his cellphone number in order to be able to contact him. Ronel Otto, police spokesperson, confirmed that the Houghs' domestic worker had reported the incident to the police. The international media only showed one side of a story which made you think all whites were bad. It was the contrary. Like any country, police force's or armies in the world had your bad individuals. It is estimated that 3000 people died with the necklace murders. Do a google search on what a necklace murder is. This murder word, necklacing, was coined by Winnie Mandela herself. In some cases the victims were forced to drink diesel or petrol and even their hands and feet were cut off so they could not run away. 'Culture does not justify cruelty'

It is not surprising that there are conflicting views about the Zulu rite of slaughtering a bull as part of the Ukweshwama, or First Fruits festival. Moreover, a right to an opinion is not in itself a right to act on it. This applies equally both to those whose opinion is that they should interfere with others and to those whose opinion is that they should be immune from interference. Therefore the crucial question in the debate about the First Fruits festival is: Who is right? Is the proposed ritual slaughter of a bull morally acceptable? Is it the sort of ritual that should be legally protected? The ceremony is performed by young males who are entering manhood. They take hold of the bull and force it to the ground. They rip out its tongue, force handfuls of earth into its mouth, gouge out its eyes and mutilate its genitals, among other things. The bull eventually dies, but not before it has endured considerable suffering. (Claims that the bull does not feel pain as a result of the herbs fed to it are entirely implausible.) Opponents of this rite argue that treating the bull in this way is cruel, on account of the suffering that the bull experiences, and that cruelty is wrong. Defenders of the practice respond that this rite forms part of Zulu culture and that all people have a right to practise their culture. To evaluate this cultural defence of the ritual, it is helpful to spell out the argument's premises and conclusion in a general way. In other words, the defence of the practice takes the following form: <ul><li>Some action, X, is a cultural practice. </li><li>People are entitled to practise their culture. </li><li>Therefore, X may be performed. </li></ul>Once we see the form of this argument - what we might call the "culture argument" - its weakness is readily apparent. We see that the argument can be used to defend not only this particular bull-killing rite, but any other cultural practice too. If X is the practice of "beating one's wife" or "excising one's daughter's genitals" or "sacrificing a human", the culture argument concludes that the practice may be performed. But even those who think that killing the bull is permissible would surely deny that these other cultural practices are acceptable. If that is the case, then it must be seen that X cannot be justifiable merely because it is a cultural practice. In other words, the (unqualified) second premise of the argument is false. The culture argument, therefore, is an extremely poor argument in defence of the bull-killing ritual, or any other practice. This is not to deny that cultural practices can have immense value for people. It would be unfortunate if we lost sight of this. Where there is nothing wrong with a practice, the fact that it is culturally valued accords it a certain weight. In rejecting the culture argument, we are only rejecting the claim that cultural value has decisive moral weight. We are denying that any cultural practice, no matter what it is, can be acceptable just because it has cultural value. We can recognise that a cultural practice can be immoral even though it is immensely valuable to its practitioners. Rejecting the cultural defence of the bull-killing rite is not sufficient to show that the rite is wrong. There are many culturally valuable practices that are not wrong. Although the culture argument fails, it remains possible that a cultural practice could be defended in some other way. Defenders of the Zulu rite might argue that animal slaughter is widely practised in South Africa. Millions of animals are killed every year for food. Why, they might argue, is there so much outrage about killing a single bull while the slaughter of millions of animals in abattoirs is accepted by many? This argument claims that opposition to the Zulu rite is inconsistent with the widespread acceptance of animal slaughter. People's moral judgements are often inconsistent and it is fitting to challenge inconsistencies. For example, there is something strange about Westerners who think nothing of slaughtering pigs, sheep, and cows for food but object to consumption of dogs in the Far East. However, there are a few things to note about employing a consistency argument in defence of the bull-killing rite. First, there is a crucial difference between the slaughter of animals in abattoirs and the particulars of the First Fruits bull-killing rite. Although slaughter of animals in abattoirs is cruel, dismembering a live and fully conscious animal is even more cruel, simply because the death (or at least the onset of unconsciousness) is much more protracted. There is nothing inconsistent in opposing greater cruelty while not opposing lesser cruelty. By contrast, there is an inconsistency in condoning greater cruelty while one opposes lesser cruelty. Second, although consistency is necessary for a good argument, it is not sufficient. It is possible to be consistently wrong. By contrast, those who are only inconsistently wrong are at least right about something. I, and many others, happen to think that this is true of those who oppose the ritual killing of a bull but permit the slaughter of animals in abattoirs. They are right about the former and wrong about the latter. There are excellent reasons, which I shall not rehash here, to think that rearing and killing animals for food is morally indefensible. The interests of animals are taken insufficiently seriously, just as the interests of blacks, Jews and others have been taken insufficiently seriously in other times and places. It is thus not sufficient to assert, as some have done, that "justice is for human beings and not for animals". The racist and the anti-semite can as easily argue that "justice is for whites, not blacks" or that "justice is for Christians and not Jews". It is simply not a good argument. While there are differences between animals and humans, what they have in common is the capacity to feel pain. That surely must be relevant when we think about how we should treat animals. And we do indeed treat it as relevant, which is why we have legislation prohibiting cruelty against animals. Unfortunately, this legislation is applied inconsistently. If people were to rip live dogs and cats apart, this would certainly be taken much more seriously by the authorities than the proposed dismembering of a bull is being treated. At stake are not merely Zulu cultural practices, but practices of all cultures. There is no human culture that has not embodied some morally indefensible practices at some time or another. Progress would never have been brought about if people were complacent about cultural practices. Finding fault with cultural practices does not require that they be abandoned entirely. Instead they need only be transformed, to use a term that will be familiar to South Africans. Zulus can foster their community spirit, give thanks and induct their young men in many possible ways that do not involve inflicting suffering on others. Indeed, causing suffering to defenceless animals seems to be a strange way of proving one's manhood. Instead, a bull might, for example, be adorned and feted - as a masculine symbol, if that is what is required - rather than being emasculated and mutilated. That would be transformation. Non-Zulus should not think smugly that their own cultural practices are acceptable. There is much criticism to go around. For example, our entire society, I have suggested, should rethink how it treats animals. Otherwise future generations will look back on our generation's cruelty to animals and charge us with the barbarism that most people today think is characteristic of only isolated practices - such as the Zulu rite and Spanish bullfighting. Criticising the cultural practices of others is much easier than criticising one's own. But this does not mean that criticising the rites of others is impermissible. It means only that we all need to be as vigilant in criticising our own cultural excesses as we are in criticising those of others. While the slaughter of animals in abattoirs is wrong, the dismembering of a live bull is still worse and thus deserves special criticism. Christopher Newsom, 23, was tied up and raped, shot in the back of the head and then dragged to a railway track and set on fire. His girlfriend, 21-year-old University of Tennessee student Channon Christian’s fate was even more horrific. Her death came only after hours of torture, during which time she was raped and savaged with a broken chair leg. She was beaten in the head and a household bleach was poured down her throat and over her bleeding and battered genital area in an attempt by her attackers to cover any evidence of rape – all while she was still alive. Then she was ‘hog-tied’ with curtains and a strip of bedding and a plastic bag was wrapped over her face. Her body was stashed inside five bigger rubbish liners and dumped in a bin, where, according to the autopsy report, she slowly suffocated to death. On Monday, the alleged ringleader of the gang accused of the killings goes on trial in Knoxville, Tennessee. Yesterday, the siblings testified in the Johannesburg High Court against their former gardener and chauffeur, Stephanus Modise, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering Douwe and Johanna Bijkersma, both 57, and Gelske Afke Wounda, 40, and attempting to murder Johanna Baecidina Durieux, 80. "I then went back to pull the curtain again and I then saw my father lying on the floor with his head covered in blood. Jan was behind me. I told him not to go inside the house, but he insisted on doing so," Hiltje testified. Jan testified that he "saw my mother's caregiver (Wounda) sitting dead on the sofa with her eyes and mouth wide open - I immediately knew the same thing had happened to my wheelchair-bound mother", Jan said. "I saw my mother in her electric chair. I did not want to look at her. It was a horrific scene," he said. The sibling's grandmother, Durieux, was stabbed in the neck but survived. Durieux died in July at a frail-care centre. While Jan was in the living room, his grandmother called out to him. "In Dutch, she said 'We've been attacked by a man carrying a long knife', before laying her face down on the floor," Jan testified. He then called the emergency services. When asked about their family's relationship with Modise, both siblings testified it was good when he started working for them in October 2004. The relationship, the court heard, turned sour when he allegedly became aggressive towards their mother, who was wheelchair-bound after one of her legs was amputated due to cancer. After the amputation, their mother organised a driving licence for the accused to enable him to become her chauffeur. Jan testified that in one incident, his mother became angry after Modise drove the family car aggressively. He said this was one of the factors that contributed to the family's decision to fire him. The court heard that prior to the decision to fire him, Modise apparently approached the family and asked for a wage increase. "My father told him that he was not able to give him an increase. He then advised him to learn a new trade and get alternative employment. He was lacklustre. My parents allowed him to stay until he got a new job," Jan said. Hiltje testified how Modise went to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to lay a complaint of unfair dismissal against her parents early in 2007. The CCMA ruled against his parents, who agreed on a payout in favour of Modise. In August 2007 Modise apparently served the Bijkersmas with court papers, threatening to take them to the Labour Court for unfair dismissal.
