There they demanded money, guns and cellphones," said Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela. They stabbed him several times with a knife and ran away with three cellphones and money. Fatyela said police still needed to confirm what else was stolen. The man was taken to the Nelson Mandela Academic hospital for treatment where he remained critical. "One of the suspects was arrested later on Thursday. He would appear at the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday," said Fatyela. More arrests were imminent. Fatyela said police believe this was the same group of robbers which had been involved in numerous house robberies in Mthatha. "They break down even the strongest burglar doors like the Trellidoor and sometimes even enter people's homes through the roof," he said. On Wednesday, armed robbers removed roof tiles from a house in Southernwood to gain access and stole a radio. They were chased by police but they dropped the radio and escaped. Another house was broken into the same day by robbers who fled with four cellphones, a laptop and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Beeld newspaper reported that the victim, Renier Lamprecht, had died an hour after he was shot. It said it was the second time he had been shot in a robbery. Three years ago he had been robbed on his smallholding in Rustenburg, and shot three times in the stomach. The paper added that the Kameeldrift community suffered heavily from serious and violent crime. In March 2008, a 38-year-old man, Marius van Greunen, was killed in a robbery. In May 2008, Adriaan Steenberg, 45, was murdered. In the same month there were more than 14 armed robberies. In October 2008, robbers killed Rudi Roach, 50, for a cellphone and a couple of beers. In the same month a woman and her daughter were robbed and a 16-year-old girl was raped during a separate robbery. In February this year, Renier Boshoff, 67, was shot dead in front of his wife. In August, a 55-year-old woman, Essie Ferreira, was robbed and earlier in December a 41-year-old woman was raped in her house. 'Oh God, not again' Pretoria - "Oh God, not again," said Renier Lamprecht on Tuesday when he realised he'd been shot during a house robbery for the second time in three years. He died an hour later. His partner, Hannelie du Toit, 39, was with him in their bedroom when four men broke into the couple's house on a smallholding in Pumulani in the Kameeldrift area, north east of Pretoria. Du Toit only realised Lamprecht , 43, had been shot when she saw the bed was soaked in blood. Lamprecht was hit in the torso. A tearful Du Toit told how Lamprecht had seen four men in the living room when he got up to use the bathroom at about 03:30. "His screaming woke me up. "I jumped up and helped him close the door. Then I heard the shot." While Lamprecht and Du Toit were trying to keep the door closed, the robbers fired a shot through the door. Then Lamprecht stood back and the robbers came into the room. Lamprecht and Du Toit were forced onto their bed, where their hands and feet where tied. The robbers repeatedly asked them for firearms, a safe and jewellery, but they had nothing. Eventually the robbers fled with Lamprecht's bakkie, three cellphones, a laptop and Du Toit's handbag. "Renier turned around and realised he'd been shot. He just said: 'Oh God, not again'," Du Toit said. When Du Toit heard the robbers driving off, she loosened the cellphone charger cables around her wrists with her teeth and hopped to the kitchen where she could cut off the tie and shoelaces around her ankles. She went back to the room to cut Lamprecht's restraints before going to the neighbours to look for help. Du Toit was still at the neighbours' house when the paramedics came to tell her they'd done everything they could, but unfortunately were unable to save him. "I went home just to say 'bye'," she said as she wiped the tears from her cheeks. In the previous incident, about three years ago, Lamprecht had been alone in a house on a smallholding outside Rustenburg when two robbers broke in. Police spokesman Captain Shado Mashobane said the family of three were watching television at around 9.30 pm, when the men came into the house and demanded money and the family's car keys. "When the man tried to resist, they hit him with a firearm on the head," said Mashobane. The man was treated for the wound on his head. The robbers fled with the family's Ford Focus and Toyota double cab bakkie and some electrical equipment. "The Ford Focus was later recovered in Naledi in Soweto, where it was abandoned," said Mashobane. He said the vehicle was fitted with a tracker. "No suspects have been arrested," he said. Mashobane said it was not known how the gang gained access to the house. No one else was injured in the robbery.

Ella Horne, who has lived in the wood and iron Victorian house at the corner of Sydenham and Essenwood roads since her birth, is known and loved by many residents in the area. Her home, which is almost a century old, is admired daily by passersby as a reminder of a bygone age. It is thought to be the only remaining dwelling of its kind in the city. Horne is a former concert pianist who worked for the Daily News for 20 years until her retirement at the age of 70. The nightmare began at 12.30pm on August 14. From her hospital bed Horne described how she was woken by the sound of breaking glass. "I went to the back of the house to investigate, and then moved to the front bedroom. As I opened the door the picture window exploded, and then he was on me, with his fingers around my throat. I didn't stand a chance." Her assailant launched a savage and protracted attack, punching her repeatedly in the face and doing his best to strangle her. He also smashed a heavy china fruit bowl against her skull. "I prayed so hard," said Horne. "'Dear God, protect me.' Then my strength started to go. 'I'm dying,' I said. I closed my eyes and tried not to let my breathing show. He left me then, and started to trash my home. Finally it was quiet. I lay there, covered in blood, with my darling cat beside me." The assailant ransacked the house and stole a television set, electric irons, radios and an unspecified number of other valuables. Horne was to lie unattended for more than 16 hours before a passing motorist noticed the broken window and alerted the police. Neighbour Allan Reinecke has vowed the community will clamp down on crime. "We will not take acts like this lying down. If criminals keep targeting Berea, they should be warned: we will take firm action."

"They only made off with a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash," Maheshu said. He said they were investigating what prompted the men to shoot the baby. According to Beeld newspaper, one of the men shot the baby in the head, after they could not find a cellphone on the wife. The report said the men asked the woman why she did not have a cellphone, as she was too old not to have one. An in-depth <a href="http://www.theherald.co.za/images/docvault/risk.pdf">security report</a> has revealed the region ranks among the four hardest-hit of the country‘s nine provinces when it comes to specific crimes, while the Western Cape – including the Southern Cape region – fares much worse in some cases. The report, released by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and titled “Who is Most at Risk?”, is a comprehensive study of the chances of people falling victim to crime that shows demographics like age, gender, race, marital status and area of residence. Among the most alarming evidence to emerge is that those who have adopted security measures to safeguard their homes are in fact more likely to be targeted than those who have not, while residents in areas with a high police or security company presence are only marginally safer than those where security personnel are scarce. “Those taking measures to protect their household from crime were no less likely to experience crime than those not adopting measures, and in fact, were more likely to be have been victimised,” said ISS researcher Robyn Pharoah, who authored the report. Based on the institute‘s 2007 crime survey involving face-to-face interviews with 5000 people throughout the country, the report highlights five categories of crimes which victims typically face: burglary, property theft, car break-ins, robbery and assault. Of the five categories, the Eastern Cape fared badly in three while the Western Cape was dismal in four. The report shows that of the respondents in the nine provinces: Eastern Cape residents are the third most targeted when it comes to robbery, after the Western Cape and Limpopo. Black male pensioners, as well as singletons and city-dwellers, are most at risk. Eastern Cape car owners also suffer the third-highest vehicle break-ins, after Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal. Single white women between 16 and 25 are the most targeted; black men the least. Eastern Cape residents have the fourth-highest incidence of property theft, with black men between 16 and 25 living in the city the most targeted. Indian women and pensioners are least at risk. On the upside, when it comes to assault, Eastern Cape residents are the fourth safest – Free State is safest – but the Western Cape has the fourth-highest incidence of assault, with the Northern Cape worst off. White men between 16 and 25 are the most likely targets, coloured women over 65 are the safest. Eastern Cape homeowners are also fourth-safest when it comes to burglary, the highest incidence being in KwaZulu Natal. Large coloured households are most at risk; small, white, rural families are safest. Fellow researchers have concurred with Pharoah‘s findings, saying victimisation trends differed according to provinces. “People in different socio- economic situations would have varying risks of victimisation and certain demographics are affected differently,” said Paulin Mbecke, senior researcher at the CSIR. “Some of our provinces are more rural and others more urban, and those characteristics will impact on the incidences of crime. “But we must remember that just because people are poor, it doesn‘t mean they will turn to crime.” Security companies have said as crime in the province becomes more rampant, residents must up their proactive measures to safeguard themselves. Safety analysts said proactive community-based programmes like neighbourhood patrols helped reduce criminal activity significantly. “People need to be vigilant when approaching their cars after shopping, and when they get home they should lock the doors,” said Atlas security company operations manager Monty Montgomery. “In many house robberies, residents have fallen asleep watching TV with a door left open.” Montgomery said while it was difficult to prevent assaults, one thing residents could do was to prevent criminals from getting into their personal space. “The main thing is to prevent perpetrators from getting too close, because after that it doesn‘t matter how strong you are, they‘ll take you on,” he said. He said vehicles should also be parked within properties to prevent break-ins, and security gates kept locked. But according to Pharoah, even taking the utmost precautions could not always prevent crimes. It was tougher for criminals to operate in areas where community members knew and looked out for one another, she said.

Speaking at the Annual Border Management Conference, Charles Goredema, program head of the organised crime and money laundering program at the ISS, said the four crimes in SA which contributed the most toward criminal activity were drug trafficking, smuggling, financial and predatory crime. He estimated that financial crimes "earned" the most with total gains of R80-billion to R90-billion a year, drug trafficking and smuggling of goods about R10-billion each while predatory crimes such as robbery, house breaking and theft cost victims about R500-million a year. "It's not an academic calculation, that's just a rough estimate," Goredema said. Using the latest SA Police Service crime figures, he took the average of the highest and the smallest amount of money gained by criminals in a specific category of crime and multiplied the amounts by the number of crimes during the year. "In 2009 I will make a much more detailed calculation because I will get the actual figures," he said.
