Farmer Brutally Murdered, body dragged behind bakkie

They held him at gunpoint while they ransacked the house for money. "They shot him in the chest, the back, and in the head, then used [the farmer's] bakkie to drag him for about 1.2km before the bakkie rolled." When police arrived on the scene the farmer's body was still tied to the Toyota LDV which was on the Ottosdal-Delareyville road. One of the alleged murderers was arrested there and led police to his two accomplices. It was suspected that some cattle may have been stolen in the attack. Cases of murder, house robbery, theft of motor vehicle, stock theft and illegal firearm possession had been opened against the three arrested men.

A victim of violent crime at the hands of criminals, again

Less than 5 months later, gunmen struck again. This 72 year old pensioner was critically injured as she fought off four armed men who attacked her in the kitchen of their Bryanston home. It came five months after she was followed in her car while driving home one night when she and her husband were attacked and beaten in their driveway as she arrived home. Making their way to Van Zyl’s bedroom at the back of the house, the suspects waited outside before they smashed the window, overpowered Van Zyl and then shot him in the head at point-blank range. Blood smears across the walls, torn curtains, overturned furniture and smashed belongings bore testimony to the struggle between Van Zyl and his attackers. The blood-soaked mattress showed where Van Zyl had lain as his attackers carried out his possessions. A distraught Pretorius yesterday said: “As I came around the corner I saw chaos. There were appliances lying in the garden and glass outside the bedroom window.” he said. Cautiously walking around outside the house, fearing that the attackers were still on the property, Pretorius spotted his nephew through the smashed bedroom window. “I could not believe it. I thought he was dead. There was so much blood. I have never seen that much blood before.” Climbing through the window, Pretorius was shocked when Van Zyl began to talk to him, pleading for help. “I get sick when I think of how I found him and think about how he lay there for hours in all that blood and pain calling for help,” said Pretorius. A case of house robbery and attempted murder was being investigated. Several things, including a cellphone, were stolen.

As she tried to run from them, she was grabbed from behind by a man who used a knife to slit her throat yesterday. The gang then escaped with a stash of goods. Residents of the quiet area, described as a collection of residential smallholdings “where the horses outnumber the people”, are shattered by the violent attack. Nico Nel, treasurer for the Alexandra cluster and former chairman of the Linbro Park Community Policing Forum, said Pestana is believed to have gone out dog training yesterday morning. She returned home and put her eight dogs into the kennels on her property before going out again, probably to do some shopping. She got back home, where she lived alone, just before noon. Nel said the gang of three had targeted her home while she was out. They managed to lift some roof tiles and gain entry to the house. “I imagine they waited for her to come because they needed the doors open to carry the loot away.” When she did arrive, they carried out what Nel describes as “the very efficient slaughter of a defenceless woman”. He said Pestana is believed to have lain dead in her home for more than six hours before she was discovered by her domestic worker. Nel is personally offering a R20 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers. He has since received numerous other pledges for the reward, which is currently growing. A man, 25, whose name had not yet been released, was stabbed to death in Albert Road on Tuesday night. Since 2006, at least two academics and two students from the University of Cape Town have been murdered in the same area. Warrant Officer Lourens le Roux was also shot and killed in front of the Woodstock police station. According to Dane's brother, Uriah, 26, he and his friend had left for work at about 07:15 and later came home to meet a business acquaintance when he found his brother in a pool of blood on the floor with several knife wounds to his body. Uriah carried his brother to his bakkie and raced to the Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival. Dane was at home alone when the murderer broke the kitchen window to gain access to the house. He came via an alley next to the house and climbed over the neighbours' wall. The man got away with a laptop and a cellphone. After fleeing from the house, neighbours saw the attacker in their back yard. There was a physical altercation when they tried to detain him. The attacker, who had a back pack with him, managed to pull free, dropped the back pack and ran away. In the bag were DVDs, a PlayStation and computer cables.
