A man, 25, whose name had not yet been released, was stabbed to death in Albert Road on Tuesday night. Since 2006, at least two academics and two students from the University of Cape Town have been murdered in the same area. Warrant Officer Lourens le Roux was also shot and killed in front of the Woodstock police station. According to Dane's brother, Uriah, 26, he and his friend had left for work at about 07:15 and later came home to meet a business acquaintance when he found his brother in a pool of blood on the floor with several knife wounds to his body. Uriah carried his brother to his bakkie and raced to the Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival. Dane was at home alone when the murderer broke the kitchen window to gain access to the house. He came via an alley next to the house and climbed over the neighbours' wall. The man got away with a laptop and a cellphone. After fleeing from the house, neighbours saw the attacker in their back yard. There was a physical altercation when they tried to detain him. The attacker, who had a back pack with him, managed to pull free, dropped the back pack and ran away. In the bag were DVDs, a PlayStation and computer cables. South Africa is extremely dangerous

THE AGE OF DENIAL is upon us with the ANC spearheading the movement. It is the latest remedy used by the ANC to denounce and rebuff anything that has a negative impact on their not so squeaky clean reputation abroad and their tolerance of criminality and mediocre methods of dealing with it. We have suddenly become a “safe country” with very little violent crime or criminals. Maybe back in the Stone Age you could have got away with denying the facts around a violent criminal attack or robbery because witnesses were scarce, recording equipment was non existent and lawlessness was the order of the day. What our current government needs to understand is whether they admit to it or not, guilt is assessed on its merits and the proof around the alleged actions. You cannot simply say “I didn’t do it”, or “it didn’t happen” or “I don’t know” if there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary, you did do it, it did happen and you do know. The problem is in South Africa you can say it and get away with it. There is however evidence that can substantiate that this country is extremely dangerous and the likelihood of you getting robbed at gun point is a betting mans dream the odds are so good. What amazes me most is how easily journalists can find these violent criminals to interview them yet they evade police for years. The latest furore is around the SWC and overseas companies selling self defence items such as bullet proof vests, stab proof vests and other protective gear to tourists coming to the world cup. Good for them, prevention is better than the cure and if criminals were malaria mosquitoes South Africa is a high risk area where Anopheles Gambiae are as thick as thieves and anti-violent attack precautions are critical. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXh5EwK7RvDEvKWj-9_LFM32_ylZr-naDK-rA9owf2jKtHZCSEJYa9olOr_J3rd_VSIlQ90Px5VXUiYj-h1j7kjkBN8BVkmuaAqKfHM2Fba3SR6kHiGKNodpsHzSXpkrzzLQNTCMz56JqQ/s1600-h/SWC2010_pic05.jpg"></a>Unsuspecting tourists are sitting ducks for our hardened free roaming thugs. According to our government these protective items are not necessary because we don’t have a crime problem and we are being falsely represented on the international stage. Wake up ANC, we live in a dangerous country in comparison to Europe and America where the majority of international soccer tourists live. They can be forgiven for feeling a little insecure when visiting a country with 50 murders a day, daily violent armed robberies, countless rapes, car hijackings and other violent attacks. It is time the ANC stop using denial tactics to brainwash the masses and desensitise them from reality. It doesn’t work, just because they vote for you don’t be so naïve as to think they believe everything you say. It is clearly evident that the majority of the voters vote with their hearts and gratitude for the ANC’s endurance through the struggle and not with their brains. These same citizens live amongst the killers, rapists, robbers and psychopaths and it’s difficult for all of us listen to the hogwash bleated out by our ministers and SAFA leaders who say we are safe and crime is over exaggerated. Surely there must be a problem when you are a deputy minister of self enrichment, minister of luxury procurement or a youth leader of woodwork protected from crime and threat with 10 body guards each. Please then explain to a tourist why wearing a bullet proof vest is wrong if someone as unimportant as Malema has body guards 24 hours a day and most people live in prisons created around their homes to keep the evil out. When confronted with the overwhelming evidence that South Africa is an often lawless dangerous hunting ground for hardened violent criminals who will kill you for a cellphone or less it is understandable that tourists may feel a little frightened and want to protect themselves. It is their right, and if they want to wear protective clothing then that’s ok. Don’t slam their choices because of our problems and inability to deal with violence. We live in the global village and information travels fast and bad news even faster. Western countries value life a lot more than Africa does and that shows in the way they deal with violent crime and murder. Violence is not tolerated and is not swept under the carpet to protect their image. The West has their fair share of white collar fraud and corruption, but it’s the senseless uncontrolled violence and death that scares them for obvious reason. Maybe its time we put human rights for criminals on hold until we have a country whose citizens respect life and have rooted out this violent disease that is killing our country and holding it to ransom. Botswana has a zero tolerance approach to violent crime and if you compare our tragically high violent crime stats with theirs the proof in their approach to dealing with violent crime would be evident. I think most tourists when given the facts would prefer a world cup in Botswana. It’s a lot safer and criminals are dealt with swiftly and strictly unlike our country where criminals share our rights regardless of their crime. I’d feel happier if my taxes were buying rope to hang these animals with instead of feeding and housing them .Maybe then tourists would come here without having to buy stab proof vests and just enjoy our beautiful country without fear of attack. I guess just living here makes you a denial expert which is a huge part of our defence mechanism which justifies living amongst some of the most psychotic criminals in the world. Those who do wake up from the utopia of denial usually pack up and immigrate to Australia, Canada or New Zealand where you are more likely to die from old age than a bullet, knife or other home made weapon used by one of our “imagined criminal attackers”. Until the ANC stop denying the facts we are destined to be passenger’s onboard a downward spiral. Malherbe's granddaughter, Kaycee, 5, was hysterical during the attack. Malherbe's son, WD, 34, said the attack lasted about two hours, "but it felt like forever. There was murder in their faces." WD said he had come for supper on Tuesday evening at his father and stepmother's. Shortly after 19:00, an Isuzu bakkie and a Toyota Corolla with a blue light on the roof, had stopped in front of the farmhouse. Three of the eight men were wearing police uniforms. The rest were "neatly clothed, like detectives". "We thought it was the police and then I opened the door. They pointed semi-automatic machine guns at me." WD said the attackers told them they were police officers from Gauteng and were investigating illegal firearms. His father asked to see identification and the men quickly waved about "a piece of paper and cards". "We could see these weren't police IDs and said we were going to call the police. They then pulled on their Balaclavas." They asked for money and keys to the safe. The attackers tied up WD, his father and stepmother and also tied the hands of his sister, Zia, and her daughter Kaycee. "They told me to lie on my face on the sofa. We weren't allowed to speak and every now and then felt a firearm against the head." WD said the attackers shocked them, but not Kaycee, several times with stun guns. The men took his father to a nearby building from where the family ran the Limpopo Meat Packers business. He gave them the keys to the safe. They took his shoes and pulled a plastic bag over his head. They took R120 000. The attackers forced him back to the house and took him and his wife to their bedroom. A plastic bag was also pulled over his wife's head. "They were choked. I felt like I was going crazy when I heard that but I couldn't do anything," said their son." Employees of the Malherbes who stayed in a flat near the main house, suspected something was wrong and activated an alarm. "They fled when the alarm went off. They took my bakkie, but later left it on a farm road. My father and stepmother's cellphones were also stolen. We feel vulnerable, what should you do if people with police uniforms and a blue light stop near you? How should you know who you can trust?" They threw him into the back of his Isuzu double-cab bakkie and drove in the direction of Mankweng, stopping along the way to drag him into the bush. They beat him until he was unconscious and fled with his vehicle, three cellphones, bank cards and some cash. One of the suspects drew R3 000 from his bank account using an ATM in Mankweng on Wednesday morning, Myburgh said. Early on Wednesday morning, Diedericks became conscious thanks to heavy rain. He crawled to the road where a passing minibus taxi stopped to pick him up. The driver took him to Mankweng Provincial Hospital, where he was found by his family, who had been searching for him. He was transferred to Limpopo Medi-Clinic. He has a cracked skull and multiple cuts and fractures. His eyes are swollen shut and half his ear has been torn off. A Polokwane police spokesman, Inspector Lesiba Ramoshaba, said no criminal case had yet been reported to them. Myburgh, however, said that Diedericks had been reported missing and that a case had been opened early on Wednesday. Subsequently, cases of hijacking, assault and robbery had been opened. Security has always been a key issue around the World Cup, but it was raised again after three men died earlier this month when gunmen attacked the Togo team at the African Cup of Nations in Angola. However, South African officials insisted that everyone will be safe at the World Cup. Poor ticket sales for the World Cup have also been reported, with a news conference on the issue scheduled for later on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on scene and found the doctor lying in the courtyard just outside the kitchen door. They raced over to treat the man but on examination found that he had been fatally wounded. "One of the suspects was wounded by his fellow gunman in the fracas. Police arrested the wounded suspect some metres away from the crime scene. Paramedics found the wounded man lying in a prostrate position on the roadway with a gunshot wound to his leg," said Botha. After being stabilised the suspect was transported under guard to an area hospital for further treatment.

They were on the trail about 7am and heading up the trail when they were attacked by rock throwing knife yielding savage scumbags. The savages then proceeded to brutally stab the two Canadian tourists, they almost bled to death but luckily other hikers came up the same trail around 10am three hours later. The two Canadians were then airllifted to hospital by helicopter. Two South African expatriates living in Canada were stabbed several times while hiking in Fernkloof Nature Reserve near Hermanus yesterday. Two fellow hikers found the couple - the man aged 59 and his wife, 57 - with multiple stab wounds and trussed up at around 9.45am and alerted the police. They were found with their hands bound behind their backs. They had been stabbed several times in the shoulders, back, neck and legs. They had also been stoned with rocks. The pair had been held up, robbed of cellphones, a digital camera, watches, rings and carry bags before being tied up with their shoelaces. Car keys had also been stolen, but the robbers had not stolen the car parked at the base of the trail. It is understood that they had been lying where they were found for at least two-and-a-half hours - all the while losing blood from the knife wounds to their arms, legs and necks. A helicopter had been close by and was immediately dispatched to race to the couple's assistance and the pair were airlifted to Hermanus Medi-Clinic private hospital. The couple has not been named. Police spokesman Neville Philander said today the two remained in hospital and that the attackers had still not been found. A case of aggravated robbery has been opened, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigating officer David Payne on 028 313 7000 or 083 444 0702. Overberg fire chief Riaan Jacobs said the two had been airlifted at about 9am. He said they had lost "quite a lot of blood" and were not able to walk or properly communicate. Overstrand municipal manager Werner Zybrands said there had been four incidents where hikers were attacked but the robbery of the Canadian couple was the first since the municipality beefed up security in the nature reserve.

They tied up both victims with rope and ties, before trying to strangle Mrs Pretorius. The couple's daughter, Hannelie Warren, said on Monday they also tried to gouge out her dad's eyes. The robbers apparently said they didn’t want him to see again and identify them to the police. "One attacker sat on my dad's back and smoked a cigarette while he was tied down. My dad has horrific injuries - he may never have normal vision again." Warren said Pretorius was still in hospital. The muscles behind his eyes were damaged and specialists aren't sure whether the muscles will recover sufficiently for him to have normal vision again. Warren said her parents were severely traumatised and receiving counselling. No arrests have been made and Warren accused the police of dragging their feet. Pretorius, speaking from the Emfuleni Medi-Clinic in Vanderbijlpark, said on Monday evening that since the attack almost six days ago, police had not interviewed him about what had happened. "They only spoke to my wife. No one has been to ask me any questions," he said. Warren said people in the building where the attack had taken place and who saw the attackers before and after the incident had also not been approached by police in a bid to gather any evidence. "This is appalling," she added. Captain Shado Mashobane of the Vereeniging police station confirmed that no arrests had been made, but said the investigation was underway. Now private investigators, who are trying to crack the case hope that a state-of-the-art identikit will help track down one of the suspects. The man in the identikit is believed to be between 20 and 23 years old, about 1.75 metres tall and speaks with a Northern Sesotho and Setswana accent. He also had a small moustache. Jeanette Naudé, who compiled the composite and profile, suspects that the man has robbed before, because he didn’t appear nervous during the robbery. Naudé developed the technique she used to compile a photo-likeness of the robber. She starts by drawing a sketch of the suspect, then, using an archive of photographs and the software program Photoshop, builds a face of the suspect. “In this case I would say that the compilation is about 70 percent accurate. It all has a lot to do with the person who we worked with,” said Naudé, who served 34 years in the SA Police Service before starting her own company, Crime Face. The robbery took place in August in the car park of Trio Trade in Silverton, Tshwane. CCTV footage revealed just how close Koen, 60, came to dying. The images show Koen driving into the premises of her family-owned business after she had withdrawn R50 000 at a bank in the area. What she didn’t notice was a white VW Polo pulling up to the gate of the premises. One of the occupants of the car held up the security guard at the gate while two accomplices approached Koen’s car. One of the men opened fire on Koen, hitting her in the right leg and left arm. As the man tried to grab her handbag, Koen fought back. His accomplice then came up behind her, placed his arm around her neck and shot her. The shot forced her to the ground. The robbers then made their escape. The CCTV footage indicated that a second vehicle, a white Toyota Venture, was involved. The man, whose name is known to The Star but can’t be identified as he is yet to be arrested, claimed he was hiding out in Polokwane. “He said he would like to tell us what happened and wanted R400 petrol money so that he could drive back to Pretoria,” explained Els. GANGS of robbers are launching lethal attacks against motorists on the R21 Highway - the main road linking OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria. The gangs have left a trail of terror behind them over the past three months. Ambushes by the gangs have seen businessmen and a USAid agency employee being attacked and have left at least four motorists and a security guard seriously injured after they were shot by the robbers. The last attack occurred last Tuesday night when a businessman was shot in the legs as he changed his car's flat tyre. The robbers, who number between eight and 20, operate between the Tembisa Road Bridge and the N1 / R21 interchange between 9pm and 4am, with most of the attacks occurring near St George Hotel. The robbers either line rocks on the highway or throw debris off bridges onto oncoming cars. They target motorists using the north-bound lanes. While attacks have occurred since September, police have done little to warn the thousands of motorists who use the highway every day. The only warning has come from the Pierre van Ryneveld community policing forum (CPF). While police claim that they are conducting clandestine operations the gangsters seem to be operating with impunity with no arrests being made. Businessman Jannie Schoeman recently survived an attack near St George's Hotel. He was returning home from Midrand along the Olifantsfontein Road when he hit a pothole. "As I stopped and got out to change the tyre two men, armed with knives, attacked. "They stole my watch, wallet and cellphone. When I tried to escape they grabbed me and tied me up with barbed wire," he said, pointing to his scarred wrists. The men eventually let Schoeman go, threatening to kill him if he did not reach the road within two minutes. "I was terrified. I thought they were going to kill me," he said, adding that the Lyttelton police had been useless in trying to solve the attack, which had taken place in broad daylight. He said when he offered to take a detective to the attack site he was not interested. "It is just a matter of time before someone is killed," he said. CPF spokeswoman, Willa De Ruyter, said they were concerned about the attacks, "especially with the sudden increase in the past weeks and the fact that the robbers did not hesitate to shoot". But the capture of their suspects broke wide open a case in which a Sandton woman was tortured with a hot iron during a house robbery last week. The attack was the third in as many years that has taken place at the luxury Bryanston complex where convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti's family were held up in 2007. It is understood the gang arrived at the complex on Thursday morning in a car with Telkom signs on it. They produced a phone account bearing the family's name and told the security guard they were there to fix the line. The guard called the unit, spoke to one of the two domestic workers and was assured that the technicians were expected. The four men then entered the house and took its owner hostage. The gang ransacked the house, stealing jewellery, computers and other small valuables. The robbers also took a computer box capturing the CCTV footage in the house. After emptying a safe, they demanded the keys for a locked vault in which the woman's husband kept his hunting weapons. But the husband was away and he had the keys with him. "I told them I didn't have them," the woman said. "They took an iron and started burning my back. They could have tortured me all day, but I didn't have the keys. They then put a pair of socks in my mouth, tied a scarf around my head and tied my hands and feet with a cable." After the robbers fled, the woman managed to free herself and call for help. Following the violent attack the woman has had to have plastic surgery for her wounds. Two domestic workers, Patricia Moyo, 29, and Tracey Khalima, 27, had vanished with the gang, and the fear at first was that they had been kidnapped. But it did not take long for the the Trio Task Team from the Alexandra cluster to consider them suspects and track them down to a flat in Hillbrow. The women, one of whom had been with the family for two years, were caught with the family's jewellery and cash. This breakthrough led officers to pounce on Leonard "Golden" Dube, who was caught with an R-4 military rifle and about R40 000 in cash. Dube was arrested in 2001 in connection with a massive heist at OR Tambo International Airport, but was released. A security guard was shot during the robbery and foreign currency, diamonds and jewellery worth more than R10 million were taken. After arresting Dube, police raided a pawnshop in central Joburg and arrested the owner, Brett Hutchings, who allegedly had some of the stolen jewellery in his pocket. The four suspects appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday and were due to appear again today. The hunt is on for the remaining three robbers responsible for the attack. Agliotti's family were attacked in 2007 and tortured for three hours by robbers. His teenage daughter was molested and his former wife was beaten by the gang. At the time he was under house arrest and under surveillance by the Scorpions. Agliotti has moved out of the Sandton complex and is currently testifying in Jackie Selebi's corruption trial. About three months ago, another robbery was attempted at the same complex. A gang failed to steal a Porsche, and a security guard was arrested for allegedly being in cahoots with the robbers.

The couple were forced into the boot of their car and driven to an isolated spot where they were terrorised for several hours. The mother of the 21-year-old who was attacked said she decided to speak out about her son and his girlfriend’s “nightmare ordeal” to warn others of the “overwhelming danger” at some of Nelson Mandela Bay’s public spaces – and to clear up misleading media reports. “I don’t want this to happen to anyone, ever,” the tearful mother said yesterday. “Our beautiful children’s lives have been changed in an instant and will never be the same again. As a family, we are devastated.” She said the two were packing up at sunset when two men came “out of nowhere” and held them at gunpoint. Two more men appeared to be waiting at the site they were later taken to. The mother said the thugs made the couple throw out their picnic gear and shoved them into the boot of the hatchback. They were then “taken off the beaten track” to a secluded spot down a gravel road off the main road, where they were tied up. Two of the assailants left at one stage to draw R150 from the girl’s bank account – R150 was her daily limit. A source close to the investigation, who asked not to be named, said the money was withdrawn from an ATM in Rink Street, Central. “Most banks have CCTV surveillance and police are investigating to see if there is any evidence from this,” the source said. When the two attackers returned, all four of the men bombarded the couple with hate speech, put a gun to the man’s head and assaulted them. The four then left in her son’s car, the mother said. Fearing they would return, “my son decided they had to escape”. The couple managed to free themselves from their restraints and leopard-crawled through the sand dunes before reaching the shoreline. The brother of the young man said: “They ran for about 45 minutes along the coastline until they reached the Noordhoek Skiboat Club, where a party was being held. The mother said it was “an absolute miracle” her son and his girlfriend’s lives were spared, but wanted to know why there had not been more media reports of similar incidents that had happened along this stretch of coast. “What happens if the next attack results in a fatality? “The public have a right to know what is going on. Are they (police and media) keeping incidents under wraps because of 2010 (Fifa World Cup) and tourism,” asked the shattered woman. She urged other parents to warn their children of the dangers. “They have to be careful. We need to speak to our children about going to public places that we should all be able to visit, but that are dangerous.” In an e-mail sent to friends and colleagues, the brother of the man who was hijacked gave more details of the horror attack. “My younger brother and his girlfriend were hijacked at gunpoint by four (men) in the Willows area and forced into the boot of my brother’s Polo hatch-back. “They were driven to a deserted stretch of bush and sand dunes,” he said. “There, their attackers bombarded the two with hate speech, but also put a gun to my brother’s head and demanded cash.” He said the men were apparently foreigners from West Africa. “They (tied them up), gagged them and drove off in their car.” He described further how the two then managed to untie themselves. “They leopard- crawled through the sand dunes and reached the shoreline and proceeded to run for about 45 minutes until they reached the Noordhoek boat club.” “Luckily for them they managed to get assistance from a group of people who were having a party there. “It was then I received a phone call that has shattered both families. “My brother has to free himself of the feeling of helplessness he is experiencing, and (they have to deal with) the sheer shock both of them would have experienced throughout their ordeal.” He said the incident had crushed a lot of spirits and it would take a lot of faith to lift his devastated brother and his partner out of this misery. “No one should have to go through what the two of them endured. When people are forced to steer clear of areas every living being should have free and equal rights to frequent, there is something seriously wrong with society.” Another man, who had stopped to watch some fishing boats, was also hijacked and tied up on the same night, allegedly by the same thugs.

Maleka was washing a pair of shoes at lunchtime when the gunmen launched their attack. The gunmen, one of whom shoved his firearm into her face, forced her into her room where they demanded the remote control for the gate. Maleka, who is the sole breadwinner for her family, said as the gunmen pulled her from her room and dragged her into the house, they threatened to shoot her. Tying her up on the floor of the main bedroom the gunmen once again demanded the remote. Ransacking the room, one of the men, who eventually found the remote, charged at the hogtied Maleka screaming that he was going to kill her. As suddenly as the attack began it ended when the gunmen, sparing Maleka's life, fled from the house in a Nissan 1400 bakkie. Maleka, who managed to untie herself, raised the alarm when she ran outside screaming for neighbours to help her. Pretorius said the gunmen had stolen a TV, a DVD player, jewellery and a camera.
