South Africa Falling Into Decay

By <a href="http://sarahmaidofalbion.blogspot.com/search/label/Poetry.%20Mike%20Wilson">Mike Wilson</a> South Africa – the name conjures up visions of white colonialism, riches of diamonds and gold, beautiful cities, beautiful people, rich farmlands and technical innovation. A strong and vibrant country with a modern army and air force and an air of expectancy, handed down from Afrikaner father to son, that their land would be the greatest in the whole continent. <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6Gm7IzfqWos" width="640"></iframe> Well it does to me and this is what the country used to be like when I lived there 40 years ago. Johannesburg was a thriving metropolis of great buildings and the frenzied rush of people going about their affairs much like any other major city in the world. It was such a powerhouse of people, ideas and innovations and the strong Boer mentality over rode all. Today Johannesburg appears to be a run down shanty town with decrepit buildings, boarded up windows, filthy garbage riddled streets and squalor everywhere. What happened?   <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LW6lOdxqSUE" width="640"></iframe> The infamous pass laws were rescinded in the early 90’s and the black man took over the country. This utopia, this land of riches, this gemstone in the crown of the continent is now like so many other African nations, a struggling mix of different tribes coming to terms with life in the 21st century. Unfortunately for these black Africans, they have not been able to rise above tribal culture and are cursed with a background that has not reached the stage which would enable them to mentally grasp all the requirements that are needed to administer a complex and busy country. From being the underdog to being the dominant force today has created major schisms within the overall South African society. There is an ongoing payback mentality that encourages blacks to take from the whites in many different ways. In one way the houses of white people are regularly burgled and effects stolen. This is not done covertly and gangs of blacks regularly threaten households. In another way there is what is now called ‘Black Empowerment’ or BEE where blacks are given preference over whites for available jobs. This stupid practice gives the unskilled African peasant direct involvement in manning the infrastructure support that runs the country. As a consequence the major power supply company Eskom is unable to maintain its equipment as most of the trained skilled white staff are no longer employed. This has caused frequent power supply problems so that they had to rely on power shedding or in other words maintaining power to select parts of their industry rather than all consumers who need it. The current youth leader of the ANC, Julius Malema, keeps telling his followers to kill the Boer, one man one bullet. He has recently been found guilty of inciting racial hatred and fined 50,000 Rand for his troubles. Not that this has changed his tactic one iota and on a recent trip to Zimbabwe he went out of his way to repeat the phrase to all who would listen. Over 3,000 white farmers have been murdered since the ANC took over in a deliberate government policy to get whites to give up their land. From being a rich farming country under white rule South Africa now faces the prospect of importing food to feed the masses. Many whites claim that there is now a policy of genocide levelled against Boer farmers as a result of the ANC policy to grab land. This is the same process that started in Zimbabwe and will have the same result. On a recent trip to Zimbabwe there were talks between Mugabe and Malema on how to take over the remaining land still in the hands of white minorities. Now there is also talk of the mining industry which made SA very rich, being nationalised for the benefit of the black politicians. Law and order is a thing of the past now. There is no law of protection for whites and no laws for the blacks to abide by. Even Jacob Zuma the current leader of the ANC had a number of rape and corruption charges levelled against him by the then law and order anti- corruption team called the Scorpions. The ANC had an easy answer to all this, they simply disbanded the unit and the charges were dropped! In fact many of the black policemen supposedly upholding what little law and order is left, are themselves involved in burglarising, raping and armed robberies. The number of deaths of whites has been unrecorded although the litany of deaths occurs on a daily basis. Many people felt that with the advent of black rule and empowerment blacks and whites would be able to sit together and maintain a strong and prosperous country that would continue to be the envy of Sub Saharan Africa. Today the situation is so bad that the country is becoming another Zimbabwe and whites are powerless to stop it but can only look on in horror as their once great country crumbles about them. Due to the political process of giving to the black at the expense of the white there are now 450,000 white people living below the poverty line in shanty towns around the country. The majority of these people are from Afrikaans backgrounds who would normally be the underclass looking after fairly menial jobs, railway workers, cleaners etc. Since those jobs are now taken by blacks these unfortunate men, women and children have no recourse but to become part of the homeless generation, forgotten by more affluent whites as well as the black government. Even some soup kitchens that were set up by well minded individuals have been closed by bureaucrats who say that the whites must fend for themselves. It’s only the help from other whites that keeps these unfortunate people with some form of subsistence. White liberalism is to blame for the problems affecting South Africa and the fall of the white Governments pre 1994. The world saw a country with blacks being oppressed and demanded change for the betterment of the black population. Just like Rhodesia several years earlier. Today, who has benefited from these changes? Certainly not the blacks as the majority of them are now far worse off than ever they were under white rule. Again, the classic example is Zimbabwe under the megalomaniac Mugabe who has robbed his country blind whilst 98% of his followers still live in shantytowns without the benefits of modern civilisation and in abject poverty. Every one of the ruling politicians in South Africa lives a life of wealth and privilege, with the latest cars, biggest houses in the best suburbs etc., yet their followers are very much worse off than they were when the whites ruled the country. Apart from the trashing of cities which have become sleazy rubbish dumps the hospital services are almost non existent. It’s hard to accept that the country that pioneered the first heart transplant under Dr. Christian Barnard has now a run down medical service which once used to be the envy of the world. Everything about the country today smacks of total incompetence with inmates running the asylum for the rest of the inmates who just have no idea what is going on. <a href="http://elliotlakenews.wordpress.com/2010/04/18/eugene-terreblanche-last-interview/">The murder of Eugene Terreblanche</a> may be just the last nail in the coffin of apathy that has affected the white liberals in this broken country. Indeed, apathy is probably the correct word to describe how the rest of the world views this former nation. It just seems that the power brokers amongst civilised nations are just sitting on the sidelines waiting for the continent to implode before they go back in perhaps 40 years time or so, and pick up the pieces once more. Although by that time the Chinese will have probably got in first and blacks will have a far stronger, stricter and nastier overseer than the whites ever were.

The highly-traumatised 48-year-old victim was found lying helpless on Kings Beach by a passing jogger at about 6am after her night of hell. These brutal killings – often accompanied by rape – are so rife that they merit only a few paragraphs in the local papers. On top of this, the richest country in Africa is being swept by an Aids epidemic, with some 11 per cent of its 48million population now infected with the HIV virus. Average life expectancy is just 50 years. The tensions are also beginning to show in the much-trumpeted harmony between black, white and coloured, as it was revealed this month that more than 3,000 white farmers have been murdered since President Mandela took power. Retired journalist Brian O’Hanlon, who has lived in scenic Hermanus, near Cape Town, for the past eight years, said: “I would not go near a black township and I would not expect the people from a black township to come in to the white areas. “There are murders every day but if you’re a resident you become inured to it. If you didn’t, you would probably have to go back to England or my native Ireland.” With the World Cup just four weeks away, many believe the organiser Fifa is now practically running the country in order to ensure that South Africa presents a clean, wholesome image to the rest of the world. Thousands of beggars and street children have been shipped out of Johannesburg and Cape Town and crammed into tin-hut settlements. An army of 44,000 police officers – more than a quarter of South Africa’s entire force – is dedicated solely to ensuring the safety of World Cup spectators. Some 8,500 of these officers will be wearing full body armour shipped in from France. Meanwhile football fans are being blitzed with advice on how to stay safe, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office warning of “a very high level of crime”. Yet despite all the fanfare, even Archbishop Desmond Tutu, 78, was this week lamenting how crime and corruption were ruining his homeland. The Nobel Peace Prize winner said: “Something happened to us. It looks like we have lost our pride. It is not because of poverty. “We are prisoners in our homes. Look at what is happening to the farmers. But it is not only the farmers. You read something horrific almost every day. We should ask ourselves: ‘Hey, what is going on?'” For some, the constant menace of crime has become so traumatic that they’ve had no option but to quit the country. Since the end of apartheid, some 800,000 white South Africans out of a total of 4.4 million have emigrated, abandoning hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland. Mr O’Hanlon said: “You have to box clever and you mustn’t put yourself in a situation where there might be trouble. You mix with your own.” Almost every South African has some horror story to tell that has either occurred personally to them or to friends and family. These crime stories range from car-jackings at gunpoint – which are now so common they don’t even get a mention in the papers – to being pistol-whipped in your own home. Philip Oliver, 41, left South Africa three years ago for work reasons and now can only marvel at how free and easy life seems in the UK. Performance coach Mr Oliver, a father of one, says: “In South Africa you have to be constantly aware of the dangers of crime. I have to pinch myself now that I’m in Britain. It may sound perfectly normal but here I can walk from my car to my hotel without a care in the world. It’s an absolute delight. You could never do that in South Africa where you live with this kind of shadow of crime over your life.” He adds: “In Cape Town you can be living in an incredible apartment which looks over Table Mountain but you’re aware that it’s risky to walk there. It’s a heavy price to pay in South Africa but if that’s all you know, you accept it.” The most notorious of South Africa’s cities is Johannesburg, which is one of the hubs of organised crime. In the run-up to the World Cup, dealers are stockpiling huge quantities of cocaine and the amphetamine “tik”. Just near Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium is the lawless ghetto of Diepsloot which is seeing four murders every week. A taxi driver was recently shot dead because he refused to hand over the equivalent of 50p in change. Vigilante squads now roam the streets while kangaroo courts dispense violent and summary justice. One British expat moved to Cape Town after seeing his Durban home ransacked for the third time. During one of these robberies he was tied up and blindfolded. The expat, speaking anonymously, said: “When South Africa won the right to host the World Cup, we thought this was gold but now we learn that for six weeks Fifa will run this country. The informal traders who thought they would make a killing cannot go anywhere near the stadiums. “Of course security is a priority, with the crime and theft rates the highest in the world. Petty crime will be at a high level. The other day in Cape Town and without any announcement, 250 police and armoured cars drove through the streets in a show of strength. It was laughable. The police in the cars were all overweight, their beer bellies hanging over their belts. They couldn’t have run 50 metres.” Seraj Jones, a senior sports writer with Media 24 in Cape Town, was equally dismissive of Fifa: “They are throwing their weight around this country, especially in terms of monitoring the ticket allocations. Nothing moves here without Fifa’s approval. But I’m not at all sure that the infrastructure is going to be finished on time. I can see it all as I come in to work every morning and I’d be amazed if the transport system was ready in four weeks.” Since 1994 the murder toll among South African farmers has been alarming, with 3,000 dead including recently white supremacist Eugene Terre’Blanche. Almost all were white Afrikaners and many were tortured before they were killed. One farmer, Manie Potgieter, was seconds from being shot dead by three armed raiders. Mr Potgieter, 30, was attacked at his farm in Vredefort, south of Johannesburg. He was tied up and forced to watch his wife Helena, 28, being stripped. “She was telling me in Afrikaans not to worry,” he said. I just prayed. The man said: ‘Listen you white b******. I have Aids. We are now going to rape your wife and give her Aids too. Then, we kill you.'” Luckily the attackers were disturbed and fled. Race relations have now deteriorated so much in South Africa that Julius Malema, the firebrand leader of the ANC’s Youth League, has been whipping up rallies with an old anti-apartheid struggle song which includes the words, “Shoot the Boer”. He caused further outrage by telling a BBC journalist: “Don’t come here with that white tendency” before throwing him out of a press conference. Mr Oliver, who moved from South Africa to Edinburgh, said: “You just get used to hearing about the violence and sometimes if you’re unlucky you experience it yourself. Of course you do all the usual things to stay safe. You’ll have burglar bars on the doors and windows as well as alarms and you’ll hire a private security firm to provide an armed response. “You’re also on constant alert when you’re out of your house, when you’re driving or parking your car. You have this natural awareness of what’s going on around you. But sometimes it’s not enough. “A couple I know from Johannesburg had five youths break into their house and their daughter was home alone. She was very distressed. That was the last straw. They were out of the country within weeks and ended up in the UK.” He added: “I don’t know many South Africans who are not schizophrenic about their love and hate for the place. If you could wave a magic wand and remove the crime then I’d go back there because it’s God’s own country.”

Tourist tells of rape ordeal in Cape Winelands hotel

Den Hollander, a divorced mother of two, was brutalised within hours of checking into the luxury hotel. She was put on antiretrovirals after the attack, and underwent psychological counselling for trauma. Two years after she was raped and robbed of R3600 at the hotel on March 9 2008: <blockquote>•Police have yet to arrest a suspect in the case;•The hotel says it is not liable to pay damages because guests signed a disclaimer protecting it against claims for loss, damage or injury; and •Den Hollander is being asked to put up R200000 as security for court costs before her lawsuit can proceed against the hotel, because she is a foreigner.</blockquote>In court papers, she accused the hotel of negligence and failure to put in place measures that could have prevented her ordeal. Speaking to the Sunday Times this week through her lawyer, Luuk Rijnen, she said she would never again set foot in Africa, except to face her attacker in court. The trip to South Africa was a dream come true after she had saved up to pay for an affordable 17-day holiday package which included a trek in the Drakensberg mountains, a visit to Swaziland, a trip to the Kruger National Park and KwaZulu-Natal. It was shortly after arriving at the Lord Charles Hotel, ahead of a tour of the Cape Winelands, that the trip turned into a nightmare. In the statement to the police after the incident, she said she was convinced she would be killed by the rapist. "He made me lie on the bed with my face down. He took the telephone wire. With this he tied my ankles. I was lying on my belly with my hands and feet tightly tied to my back. "I remember that he made this quite tight. After this he put blankets and pillows over me, so I was afraid now he would shoot me because of all this noise-insulating material." Her assailant had been hiding behind the bathroom door when Den Hollander returned to her room after a few drinks with her tour group. The hotel, however, is defending the claim and in turn said Den Hollander was negligent with her own safety by not properly locking her room door despite written warnings. The hotel said it had taken "reasonable steps to guard against harm to guests by among other things, engaging the services of an independent contractor". Group chief executive officer for Command Security Services, Shaffie Mowzer, said on Friday that what had happened was both unfortunate and tragic but the company could not comment. The hotel further stated in court papers that Den Hollander had, upon arrival at the hotel, signed a disclaimer absolving it of any liability. It read: "The Lord Charles accepts no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury that may occur on our premises." The hotel has applied to the court to compel her to pay R200000 in security for costs. But Den Hollander has vowed to fight on and says she refuses to be bullied. Den Hollander told the Sunday Times via e-mail: "Did they change anything? Or do they just try to push me away so no one finds out how unsafe it is?"

We hold the ANC responsible not only for the murder of Eugéne Terre’Blanche, leader of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB), but also for the ongoing genocide of whites in South Africa. Eugéne Terre’Blanche dedicated his life to the struggle for his people and a sovereign state for the white Boer people. Develop programs to address the problem of illegal immigrants, which according to some sources, numbers more than 25% of total population. It is known that illegal immigration is directly proportional to the level of crime, including motivated by racial hatred; 10. Strengthen the monitoring of human rights of the White population in other African countries, especially in those where the White minority has traditionally exercised significant social, economic, political activity, such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola and Mozambique. Anika, a Grade 11 learner at Hoerskool Gerrit Maritz, was attacked at home where she had spent the day sick in bed with an ear infection. According to Anika's father, it looks like she fought back and tried to run away as the dining room table had been moved and the dining room chairs were overturned. Her murder has caused outrage among her friends and South Africans sick and tired of crime with many posting messages on social websites such as Facebook calling for government to step up its fight against crime. You cannot simply say “I didn’t do it”, or “it didn’t happen” or “I don’t know” if there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary, you did do it, it did happen and you do know. The problem is in South Africa you can say it and get away with it. There is however evidence that can substantiate that this country is extremely dangerous and the likelihood of you getting robbed at gun point is a betting mans dream the odds are so good. What amazes me most is how easily journalists can find these violent criminals to interview them yet they evade police for years. The latest furore is around the SWC and overseas companies selling self defence items such as bullet proof vests, stab proof vests and other protective gear to tourists coming to the world cup. It doesn’t work, just because they vote for you don’t be so naïve as to think they believe everything you say. It is clearly evident that the majority of the voters vote with their hearts and gratitude for the ANC’s endurance through the struggle and not with their brains. These same citizens live amongst the killers, rapists, robbers and psychopaths and it’s difficult for all of us listen to the hogwash bleated out by our ministers and SAFA leaders who say we are safe and crime is over exaggerated. Surely there must be a problem when you are a deputy minister of self enrichment, minister of luxury procurement or a youth leader of woodwork protected from crime and threat with 10 body guards each. Please then explain to a tourist why wearing a bullet proof vest is wrong if someone as unimportant as Malema has body guards 24 hours a day and most people live in prisons created around their homes to keep the evil out. When confronted with the overwhelming evidence that South Africa is an often lawless dangerous hunting ground for hardened violent criminals who will kill you for a cellphone or less it is understandable that tourists may feel a little frightened and want to protect themselves. It is their right, and if they want to wear protective clothing then that’s ok. Don’t slam their choices because of our problems and inability to deal with violence. We live in the global village and information travels fast and bad news even faster. Western countries value life a lot more than Africa does and that shows in the way they deal with violent crime and murder. Violence is not tolerated and is not swept under the carpet to protect their image. The West has their fair share of white collar fraud and corruption, but it’s the senseless uncontrolled violence and death that scares them for obvious reason. Maybe its time we put human rights for criminals on hold until we have a country whose citizens respect life and have rooted out this violent disease that is killing our country and holding it to ransom. Botswana has a zero tolerance approach to violent crime and if you compare our tragically high violent crime stats with theirs the proof in their approach to dealing with violent crime would be evident. I think most tourists when given the facts would prefer a world cup in Botswana. It’s a lot safer and criminals are dealt with swiftly and strictly unlike our country where criminals share our rights regardless of their crime. I’d feel happier if my taxes were buying rope to hang these animals with instead of feeding and housing them .Maybe then tourists would come here without having to buy stab proof vests and just enjoy our beautiful country without fear of attack. I guess just living here makes you a denial expert which is a huge part of our defence mechanism which justifies living amongst some of the most psychotic criminals in the world. But in an unusual mobilisation of forces on Tuesday night, members of the community, along with a group of construction workers from Mamelodi, rallied together to hunt down the alleged culprits. Two men who were found in possession of an unlicensed handgun and jewellery belonging to Odendaal were arrested – one of them was seriously hurt after being subdued by the workers. The men broke into the Farnham Street home while Odendaal’s domestic worker Francia Majadibodu was taking a shower. Odendaal was out shopping at the time, and believed to have been attacked by her killers, who were armed with an assortment of weapons, including a screwdriver, when she surprised them as they were ransacking her home. The men are believed to have tortured her before sexually assaulting her. Neighbours and police said it seemed as if the attackers were fleeing through the garden when Odendaal, who had been left for dead, managed to raise the alarm. This apparently prompted her attackers to return. It seems they then killed Odendaal. Police at the scene could not say whether she had been shot or stabbed. Majadibodu discovered Odendaal’s body lying sprawled in a outside room near the kitchen. Police spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko confirmed that Odendaal had apparently been tortured before being murdered

No matter how long it would take, he would hunt down Raymond Zulu for the brutal attack her family suffered in October 2007. Yesterday, Macintosh called Bronwyn while still deep inside extension 2 of Diepsloot township. Next to him, in the rubble of a half-broken shack, was a man in handcuffs. The man dubbed "Razor". According to police sources, Macintosh began receiving information about Zulu's movements last Friday. He spent each night of the weekend in the township, north of Johannesburg, meeting with as many as five informers monitoring the area. At the time of their escape, Zulu and his gang were called "sewer rats" by police officers because they had low profiles in the townships and were extremely difficult to track down. But the crimes they allegedly committed were heinous. The five-member gang are accused of an attack at the home of Bronwyn and her husband, former Wits University professor Alan Paterson. Their daughter Jamie, who was 17 at the time, was raped on the eve of her final exams. Bronwyn was stabbed with a pair of scissors. The robbers broke three of her ribs, smashed her nose and tore off a piece of her ear. On September 10, Zulu and eight other prisoners managed to break out of the Alexandra Magistrate's Court, attacking court orderlies and taking advantage of the run-down building. Among them was Sibusiso Mashinini - also an alleged member of the Razor Gang - and two violent robbers who pulled off a heist at a Sandton jewellery store. Five of the men were rearrested, but Zulu and Mashinini were on the run. Mashinini is yet to be captured. Yesterday, Macintosh - of the Trio Task Team, Alexandra police cluster - and five fellow officers arrived in Diepsloot and were led by the informers to the shack where Zulu was hiding. The chain and lock were on the outside of the door, an apparent attempt to fool people into believing no one was home. When Zulu refused to open up, Macintosh kicked down the door, causing parts of the shack to come crashing down. Sources say Zulu was so shocked, all he could say was: "Mr Macintosh, you've got me." Zulu was taken to the Sandton police station holding cells and is due to appear in court on Monday. The Patersons were overjoyed at yesterday's arrest. "He (Macintosh) said to me: 'I won't rest until I find him. I'll get him one day'," Bronwyn told The Star. "He is an unsung angel who has been quietly putting his life at risk for the sake of others. He should be commended." She added that the news came as a complete surprise. "We are cheered by the thought that there are ordinary policemen out there doing magnificent work, and we thank them," Alan said. "My family would now urge the authorities to ensure that these and other gangs will no longer slip through the system." After the robbery, Alan moved to England to set up a new home for his family. But he decided to return to South Africa, and is due back next month. When Zulu and Mashinini escaped, Alan wrote a letter to President Jacob Zuma, but has not received a response. Zulu was found with an unlicensed firearm and will face fresh charges for that and for his escape. He has been linked to several other cases of violent house robberies and a murder, police spokesman Inspector Lee Ramdiyal said. The Razor Gang face two separate trials at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court, and police will investigate whether Zulu committed any new crimes while on the run. While suspects have been arrested, the woman and her attorney, who commended the watchdog for the arrests, claim they are bungling the identification parade - a vital part of the investigation - by causing unnecessary delays. The Rustenburg policeman, along with three of his colleagues, were arrested on Friday, three weeks after the ICD's investigation began. They were arrested after they apparently refused to appear in an identification parade The receptionist's nightmare began on September 29 when she was arrested on charges of stealing her former fiance's fishing rods. The charges were withdrawn the following morning, in what the woman believes was an attempt by her ex-fiance to prevent her from attending a custody hearing for their 18-month-old son. Clutching her mother's hand tightly, the petite Hercules woman, who recently received death threats, yesterday described how a policeman beat her, forced her to remove her pants and panties before he raped her, while his colleagues allegedly sat in a nearby office ignoring her screams for help. Breaking down in tears, the woman, supported by her mother and attorney, Delia de Vries, described her ordeal. It started when two female cellmates were transferred to another police station. "I knew I was going to be hurt. When I saw them go I knew that it was just a matter of time before they did something to me," she said, recalling how a policeman had earlier ordered her to use a neighbouring male detainee's cellphone to phone her family to tell them to bring R200 hidden in a packet of soup if she did not want to be attacked. The woman said the attack happened just after 8pm when she asked to go to the toilet. "When the policeman came in behind me I knew I was going to be raped. He pushed me against the wall, beat me, forced me to take off my pants and panties and raped me," the crying woman said. "When he finished, he pulled up his pants, told me to get dressed and come outside. He took me back to my cell and then left me," she said. Unable to wash herself, the woman was forced to sit in her cell until the following morning, when she was taken to the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court, where the charges were withdrawn. She went to the Tlhabane police station to lay a charge, but instead of receiving assistance, she was forced to leave when a policewoman, hearing that she had been raped by a policeman, suddenly told her that the station's computer system was down and she could not be helped. The traumatised woman said she went to the Hercules police station in Pretoria, close to where she lives, where officers told her to go to a district surgeon so that the necessary medical reports could be completed. Once again the woman was turned away. "When I explained what happened, the district surgeon told me to leave," she said. The woman finally received medical attention at Netcare 911's Akasia Hospital, where she was put on antiretroviral medication. De Vries, criticising the way the ICD handled the identification parades, said: "They were not prepared for the parades, which have twice been postponed. The parades were a complete charade, with the last one, which was meant to have taken place on Friday, being fundamentally flawed, and once again postponed," she said, adding that her client would have had to physically identify her attacker by touching him on the shoulder, which was inhumane, given the circumstances of the attack. "We have now been told there will be another identity parade on Wednesday, but have no information on the time or place." ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini hit back. "The investigation was started the day after the case was received. We are satisfied with the work we have done and we dispute, categorically, that the ICD delayed or bungled the case," he said. North West Public Safety MEC Howard Yawa said: "Police stations are supposed to be places of safety for the weak and vulnerable, therefore the occurrence of a despicable and heinous crime at a police station, allegedly committed by a member of the police service, is deplorable." National police spokesman Lindela Mashigo, commenting on the woman being turned away, said there was no reason for the victim to have been refused assistance and "sent from pillar to post". "We have responsibilities as police when it comes to reported sexual offences, which include treating the victim with respect and dignity, and informing them of their right to lay a charge." He declined to comment on the alleged rape because the ICD is investigating the case.

A bloody knife was found at the scene. The boys were ordered to remain in custody when they appeared briefly in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Evidence was also found to suggest Blignault had been raped, but police said a post-mortem would be conducted today to establish the facts. The two suspects used R150 they allegedly took from her purse to buy alcohol and were drinking at the home they shared with the grandmother of one of the boys in Green Valley on Saturday night when police arrived to arrest them. A DVD player was found with the two youths after police earlier found a radio and frozen chicken, also allegedly from Blignault’s home, in bushes outside the grandmother’s house. Both youths had previous brushes with the law. The shots are all the more chilling for having been filmed in a classroom in one of Cape Town’s most notorious townships. In the corner of the frame, pupils as young as 12 look on as violence once again engulfs a South African school. In one of the biggest but least talked about challenges to President Jacob Zuma’s new government, schools have descended into a spiral of crime that has seen murder and rape in playgrounds and classrooms. As terrified teachers leave the profession in large numbers, security in schools is being beefed up to include police sniffer dog patrols and hand-held metal detectors. Psychologists are being drafted in to help staff to cope with trauma. A recent survey in KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma’s home province, revealed there were 11 murders, 280 rapes and more than 2,500 violent assaults in its schools last year. A further 3,000 cases of drug possession were recorded, a pattern repeated across the country. Alcohol and drug abuse are rampant. In the Free State, bars close to schools were reported to be selling alcohol and drugs to pupils who would often arrive drunk and armed with guns for their classes. The province also reported playground murders and the seizure of ammunition and knives. Throughout the country there are daily reports of shocking violence. Two 60-year-old women died after they were allegedly doused with petrol and set alight by pupils at Manhlenga high school in Manguzi, KwaZulu-Natal. Reports suggest the children believed the women had cast a spell on them. A teenager from Thornwood secondary school near Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, was sentenced in Durban for murdering a teacher who had “humiliated” him in front of his fellow pupils. A 14-year-old from the New Drift high school near Paarl, in the Western Cape, appeared in court after stabbing a fellow pupil in the heart after an argument on a school bus. Also in Durban, mobile phone videos showing the rape of a schoolgirl were circulated in playgrounds, leading to the arrest of three schoolboys. In Cape Town there have been at least 60 stabbings in schools in the past three months. The murder of a headmistress, shot in the head in her office, has led to calls for a permanent police presence in schools. According to Avril Knott-Craig, chairwoman of a Quaker campaign for nonviolent schools in Cape Town, the onslaught could leave its mark for generations. “Children learn from their environment and in particular that violence appears to be the most effective way to solve problems and so, when they are angry, they resort to fighting, bullying, stabbing, shooting and other forms of assault, just as their adult counterparts do,” she said. Teaching unions claim that depression and anxiety are becoming common among teachers. In township schools it is not uncommon for 30% of teachers to be off work with trauma-related stress. According to some critics, tough government measures, including head teachers given search-and-seize powers for guns, knives and drugs, do not seem to have had much impact. Some heads have admitted that they are afraid to use their powers for fear of retribution.
