ANC t-shirts went for R150. The t-shirts had all been bought from China for R5 each. The formal programme was scheduled to start at 14:00. More than two hours later, nothing had happened. ANCYL leader Tsotsi Malema made an appearance, to the delight of the delegates who were paid large sums of money to attend. The festival, held under the theme "Let's Defeat Imperialism" i.e "lets not only kill the Boers - let's also drive all Whites out of South Africa", was being hosted by the NYDA in partnership with the World Federation of Democratic Youth. A total of R69m had been budgeted for the event. R68 million of this would go towards Tsotsi Malema and the organisers. Of this amount R40m had come from the National Lotteries Board.

World Communist Youth Front to Meet in South Africa

The old Soviet front <a href="http://www.keywiki.org/index.php/World_Federation_of_Democratic_Youth">World Federation of Democratic Youth</a> has been organizing international youth festivals every three to four years since the 1940s. The last three festivals were held in Venezuela (2005), Algeria (2001) and Cuba (1997). The SA presidency has granted an extra R29-million to the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) for the hosting of a nine-day ‘World Festival of Youth and Students' event themed “Let's defeat imperialism”. <a href="http://www.nyda.gov.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=363:south-africa-to-host-the-largest-international-youth-festival-in-johannesburg&catid=38:news&Itemid=220">The National Youth Development Agency</a> is a public entity, mandated to act in an impartial manner, to advance the interests of all of South Africa's youth. Instead, it is now going to be spending nearly R30 million on a conference being hosted by a radical global youth organisation, of which the ANC Youth League are members. This is a conference that has repeatedly been held in radical, oppressive states - in recent years, host cities have included Pyongyang, North Korea; Havana, Cuba; and Caracas, Venezuela. Member parties who make up this organisation include the ZANU-PF Youth League from Zimbabwe, and the youth league of the Workers Party of North Korea. The theme of this year's conference is "Let's defeat imperialism", and topics for seminars include "The builders of the anti-imperialist media are fighters against lies and manipulation!" and "Solidarity with [North] Korea". According to the event's programme, President Zuma will be attending activities on day four of the event. That the state, the Presidency, and President Zuma himself, should be legitimising an event of this nature, and ploughing state resources into it, beggars belief and constitutes electioneering at the state's expense. The National Youth Development Agency should be spending every cent available to it to promote opportunities for all South Africans, and not on lavish banquets and radical gatherings that in no way advance the cause of the nation's youth. The Agency's continued existence has resulted in a significant opportunity cost for the three million unemployed young South Africans. The NYDA's R400 million annual budget could be used to fund initiatives that promise to make a much greater impact on youth development. The NYDA, however, has become terminally compromised. The NYDA was increasingly becoming an employment agency for Julius Malema's ANC Youth League, following revelations that its provincial boards have been filled with youth league cadres. President Zuma should disband this R400-million entity, whose only purpose seems to be to placate the ruling party's Youth League.

Kasrils praised Hamas, which has been designated by the United States as a terrorist organization, and invited Haniyeh to visit South Africa. Several months earlier, Kasrils did similar PR work on behalf of Hezbollah, another U.S.-designated terrorist group. South Africa's chumminess with these two well-known terror organizations may come as a shock to Americans, for whom South Africa probably conjures up fuzzy images of Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey opening up a luxurious school for disadvantaged girls and the heroic triumph of democracy and justice over racism. But it shouldn't. Why has post-apartheid South Africa's easy relationship with dictatorships been downplayed by the media for years? That oversight seems to reflect a disinclination to report bad news about the African National Congress -- Mandela's party, which led the fight against apartheid -- and especially any news that might be perceived as tarnishing the popular and comforting narrative surrounding the country's triumphant emergence from apartheid. Even as South Africa moves slowly into the anti-Western camp, few outsiders are willing to criticize the ANC, partly out of a misguided sense of solidarity and partly because the party cloaks itself in a shroud of moral absolutism that not so subtly implicates its critics as racists, Western stooges or apologists for apartheid. (To cite only one of many examples, in February, the ANC government attacked the British Broadcasting Corp. for supposedly alleging that "Africans are less than human, or, at least, genetically inferior" in a documentary about out-of-control crime in Johannesburg.) But scurrilous accusations shouldn't be allowed to deter reasonable criticism. And just because the ANC's current leaders were once imprisoned by white racists does not render them immune from censure today. The reality is that, among democratic countries, none has been more supportive of Iran's nuclear ambitions than South Africa. While the United States and its European allies fret over what to do about the nuclear program of this rogue, theocratic state, South Africa's ambassador to the United Nations, displaying remarkable credulity, declared last year: "We will defend the right of countries to have nuclear technology for peaceful uses. For instance, Iran." In March, after assuming a temporary two-year seat on the Security Council, South Africa attempted to gut a resolution sanctioning Iran for defying demands that it freeze uranium enrichment. On the Security Council, it has regularly sided with Russia and China -- the two powerful, veto-wielding nations that are consistent obstacles to the defense of liberty. In its first substantive vote on the council, South Africa sided with those two states against a nonbinding resolution condemning the human rights abuses of the Myanmar military junta. Archbishop Desmond Tutu admitted that the vote was "a betrayal of our own noble past." Last week, the South African ambassador to the U.N. warned that any talk of sanctions against Sudan for its actions in Darfur would be "totally unacceptable." How can the ANC, with a straight face, call sanctions against a genocidal regime totally unacceptable when it demanded complete and utter isolation of the white apartheid government in Pretoria? Rounding out South Africa's disgraceful foreign policy is its stance toward Zimbabwe, where President Robert Mugabe is inflicting what some have referred to as a "silent genocide" against his own people through starvation and the manipulation of food aid. Instead of threatening sanctions or even lightly criticizing his regime, South Africa has kept Mugabe afloat through vast economic aid and, in 2005, strengthened an already dubious military alliance between the two governments. A large part of the explanation rests with Mandela himself. Although he is regarded as perhaps the most inspirational figure in the world, the fact is that throughout his life, Mandela has praised an unseemly crew of dictators -- including Fidel Castro ("Long live Comrade Fidel Castro!" he said in 1991), Moammar Kadafi (whom he visited in 1997 in defiance of American objections) and Yasser Arafat ("a comrade in arms") -- for their support of the ANC while it was in exile. And he has remained quiet about Mugabe even though a strong rebuke might influence current African leaders to do the same, and Mandela's reticence is a stain on his otherwise illustrious legacy. The roots of the ANC's willingness to overlook totalitarianism go back to its historic hostility toward the West, which solidified during the apartheid years, when it was the Soviet Union that supplied the ANC and the United States, Britain and Israel were unwilling to cut ties to the white government in Pretoria. Regardless of what happened many years ago, previous policies by the U.S. and other Western countries toward South Africa cannot possibly justify the ANC's current friendliness toward Hamas, Hezbollah, Mugabe, Khartoum and Tehran. Yet the ANC refuses to change. Today, it still governs not by itself but as part of a "tripartite alliance" with the country's trade union coalition and the South African Communist Party. It's no surprise, then, that in a recent weekly letter from South African President Thabo Mbeki recounting an ANC delegation trip to Vietnam, he spoke, even all these years later, of "the U.S. war of aggression against the Vietnamese people" and lauded the communist dictatorship's "struggle for freedom and national independence." Mbeki and his ANC colleagues see South Africa as having inherited an "anti-imperialist" intellectual tradition heroically opposed to the Western democracies. With the fall of apartheid, a window of opportunity emerged in which South Africa could have come to the fore as an unrivaled advocate for human rights around the world. Given its own struggle against injustice, the ANC is right to regard itself as having a special duty to stand with the innocent against authoritarianism, terrorism and privation. Regretfully, it appears that South Africa -- at least under the rule of the massively popular ANC -- has decided to cast its lot with the likes of Robert Mugabe, the mullahs in Iran and the terrorists of Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Post-Mbeki Government Continues to Recycle Thugs and Thieves

IN A recent radio debate with analyst Steven Friedman, African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Gwede Mantashe spoke of the Polokwane revolution as a rejection of Thabo Mbeki’s ANC. To quote Tony Leon, the ANC government has yet to show us a dictator it does not like. Supporting China, SA’s R60bn-trading partner and new colonial master, is more important than promoting world peace. For both countries, respect for human rights is an obstacle to their attainment of a national democratic revolution — so stupidly affirmed by presidential spokesman, Thabo Masebe, on a national news bulletin. Unbelievably, Masebe said the presence of the Dalai Lama would just focus attention on relations between China and Tibet, and divert attention from the good things SA is doing. Yeah, right! Good things such as mowing down black foreign nationals and refugees fleeing their turbulent countries for SA . News that Sheryl Cwele, wife of Minister of Intelligence Siyabonga Cwele, is allegedly involved in drug smuggling, fully explains the dip in public confidence in the ruling party. Surely President Kgalema Motlanthe should have suspended the minister of intelligence immediately, pending investigations. How can one command the intelligence forces of the country when intelligence on the home front is found wanting? Does this not remind us of former police commissioner and head of Interpol, Jackie Selebi, and his links with underworld figures such as Glenn Agliotti ? Where is the political accountability? Why do politicians want our vote when they do as they please anyway? Transparency is an alien concept, replaced by a culture of impunity that has become inscribed in the DNA of the body politic. The post-Mbeki government continues to recycle thugs and thieves, appointing them to leading positions in the state. No wonder election posters display bland slogans such as the ANC’s “Working Together We Can Do More”. The ANC can no longer in all honesty make promises they know they will fail to fulfil. As someone wisely said, “Politicians know it’s not necessary to fool all the people all of the time — just during election campaigns.” The time for taking our lives into our own hands is now. We would really be stupid if we vote to continue the status quo, which makes both the Congress of the People and the ANC ineligible. Let us make April 22 the beginning of the real transformation of SA by voting responsibly — otherwise we have no right to moan when things get worse. Oh, and I forgot, I should have translated the blah blah's as er, er... because that is when Mbeki's brain is busy in lying mode (which is most of the time anyway). When he goes "er" and "um" or "er, er" and "um, um"... that's probably when his brain is busy overriding his conscience and his mind is substituting bullsh*t in the place of reality. He pauses and "er's" and "um's" so much because he has to think carefully to ensure that the lie comes out right. So if you'd listened to what President Mbeki had to say, then you'd have come away with the following (false) impression: That President Mbeki is on a mission to cut our fuel costs in South Africa by cutting out some (unseen) middle man whom we are dealing with when we deal with our other bum chums - the Iranian terrorists. So off Mbeki goes, to cut out the middle men by buying oil from that communist piece of trash, Hugo Chavez who wishes to engage in a Mugabe time travel experiment to send South America back into the stone age. Well, you'd think that if we're on this hallowed mission to cut out the Middle Men, then as President Mbeki said (about once), THE PRICES WILL COME DOWN. Well, a buddy of mine told me that the very next day the newspapers were saying... "Don't expect the fuel prices to come down any time soon..." It appears therefore that Mbeki's entire speech about middle men was really a load of rubbish. (But this should not surprise us at all because since when does Mbeki give a speech that is NOT a load of complete rubbish??). So what is the real reason that Mbeki and his communist bum chum Chavez got together? I'm not sure. They seem to be supporting each other much like the ANC had a never-ending love-fest with that communist hell hole called Cuba. Yes, Cuba, where Fidel Castro made time stand still and where everyone still drives cars made in the 1950's. Yes, another great testimony to socialism and communism - taking poor people and making them poorer. Taking poor people and stripping them of any future and hope they might have had if they were left alone. Now that Fidel Castro is almost dead (I can't wait for him to die and go on the Express train to hell), we have Chavez with all his oil money trying to spread the Gospel of Karl Marx across South America. In Africa we've had enough of the Cubans. The Cubans are so backward that most of Africa could teach them something. Cuban doctors know less than South African nurses do. We know all about the Cubans, and the less we see of them in Africa, the better. I hope we don't have to start seeing Venezuelans in their place though. But Mbeki loves communists and loves dictators and murderers too. I'm sure Jacob Zuma will carry on with this love fest when Mugabe leaves. Finance Minister Trevor Manuel ranks second on the VIP list with a R100 000 price tag. He is followed by five senior cabinet colleagues - Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe, Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica, Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya and trade and industry minister Mandisi Mpahlwa - who each warrant a R70 000 table fee. Delegates interested in the eight remaining tables - more humbly priced at R50 000 each - will be able to rub shoulders with the likes of Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana; Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils; Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula who shares a table with former Zimbabwean cabinet minister and Zanu-PF stalwart Ibbo Mandaza, and Gauteng MECs Ignatius Jacobs and Paul Mashatile. The conference is aimed at "people's participation, expanding the democratic space, developing an alternative people's economic, political, social and cultural agenda" and creating "alternative forms of popular governance", according to the invitation. And the planners hope to attract "an array of regional and international civil society activists, social movements, scholars, campaigners and indigenous movements", particularly those with "extensive expertise in grassroots mobilisation and the politics of democratic mass participation". Among those expected to attend are the ANC, the Anti-Privatisation Forum, the communist parties of Brazil, India (Marxist), Lesotho, and Sudan, Cosatu, Idasa, the Philosophy Institute of the Cuban Ministry of Science and the Western Sahara's Polisario Front. Speakers will include: SACP General Secretary Blade Nzimande; Zimbabwean political commentator Brian Raftopolous; Lotta Johnsson Fornarve, a former board member of Sweden's Isolate South Africa Committee; Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, SACP politburo member and former deputy health minister; and other left-leaning politicians from around the world. Discussion topics will include: "beyond the denouement of racist and xenophobic violence - an activist approach to progressive worker internationalism and the effects of migration in the current conjuncture"; "the mission and the communal council as instruments to mobilise and strengthen participative and protagonist democracy in building socialism in the 21st century"; and "achievements and setbacks in the history and actuality of the Swedish labour movement in the struggle for political, economic and workplace democracy". Idi Amin’s regime killed over 300,000 civilians in Uganda between 1971 and 1979. The MPLA wiped out 125,000 civilians in Angola (1975-1987). The Communist regime wiped out 1.5 million people in Poland just between 1945 and 1948. “As the arbitrary power of a regime increases massively…as we move from democratic through authoritarian to totalitarian regimes, the amount of killing jumps by huge multiples.” “Never has there been a war involving violent military action between stable democracies… democracies don’t, or rarely, make war on each other. To this I would add that the less democratic two states are, the more likely it is they will fight each other.” Far from governments being the solution to crime and violence, historically governments have been the prime culprits for crime and violence. Far from governments being the solution, they are more often than not the problem. Most government policies to deal with crime and poverty are counter productive, creating more crime and more poverty. No where is this seen more clearly than in the state attempts to disarm civilians. Every genocide and Democide of the 20th Century was preceded by gun control and disarmament of civilians. Just as criminals prefer unarmed victims, tyrants prefer disarmed citizens. A government that does not trust its citizens with weapons cannot be trusted with power. Freedom is when the government fears the people. Tyranny is when the people fear the government. No government can be trusted with a monopoly of force. Decentralisation of power, the rule of law and armed citizens are essential foundation for freedom.
