He secreted his lethal contraption in the spare-wheel well of a powder-blue Ford Cortina, which he parked one Saturday night on a crowded beachfront esplanade in Durban. <br /><br />The bomber was out of earshot when his device exploded into two busy white bars. <br />Magoos bar and the nearby "Why Not" bar were targeted because they were believed to be frequented by apartheid security force personnel, who were regarded as legitimate targets in the ANC's armed struggle against the former government. Few, if any, of the victims were members of the security forces. <br /><br />That was not the first time the ANC had used car bombs and it was not the last time. <br /><br />McBride and a companion were convicted of the bombing, and McBride was sentenced to execution three times for his part in the attack. A pardon negotiated by Nelson Mandela saved McBride from death row. In 1999 McBride was released and granted amnesty for the Magoo’s Bar terror attack by the TRC due largely to the fact that the ANC claimed it had ordered McBride to attack the pubs, contrary to its initial denials that it was involved in the bombing. <br /><br />McBride, one of the most famous saboteurs in the furtive military underground of the ANC, then became a diplomat in the new SA government, then was recalled for sexual indiscretions (he sexually abused white female staffers at the Malaysian embassy where he worked). His reward was to be appointed as Police Commissioner for the second largest Urban Metropolitan police force in South Africa... a position from which he was suspended for four years due to a drunk driving charge. <br /><br />Yet another fine example of a black history maker.... <br /><br />The Constitutional Court recently ruled that 'Bomber' McBride may be called a murderer because of the cold-blooded multiple murders which he committed although he had received amnesty for the incident. But he still stands by the bombing, saying that if he was in the same situation, he would do it again. <br /><br />So, on this sad anniversary, our thoughts are with the next of kin of those victims who died and the 73 innocent victims who were injured in the deadly blast that night 25 years ago. <br /><br />The total number of people killed or injured in the 30 years of MK's campaigns is not known exactly. MK launched its first guerrilla attacks against government installations on 16 December 1961 and was subsequently classified as a terrorist organization by the South African government and the United States, and banned. Ten leaders of the ANC were tried for 221 acts of sabotage in the Rivonia Trial.<br /><br />Details are not available, but it is estimated that the MK High Command co-ordinated over 190 acts of sabotage between October 1961 and July 1963. Gauteng local government website hacked

"We will speed up its launch as it is all ready anyway."<br /><br />This follows a glitch on the South African Airways website on the weekend. Visitors to flysaa.com were met with a message saying that the website had expired on January 17 2010 and was "pending renewal or deletion", News24 reported. </span><p>

2010 Terror Plot: 'SA not ready'

<p><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"><strong><span style="color:#990000;">An expert on Islamic militancy has warned that the South African intelligence services are "woefully, inadequately prepared" for the potential threat of terrorism during the World Cup next year.</span></strong><br /><br /><object height="313" width="384"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/c-AibsUL_SM&hl=en&fs=1"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/c-AibsUL_SM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="384" height="313" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object><br /><br />Hussein Solomon, head of the International Institute of Islamic Studies in Pretoria, said militants had already established cells in South Africa.<br /><br />He was commenting today on reports that Somali terrorists linked to al-Qaeda have been planning to attack US interests here.<br /><br />The Weekend Argus reported that the US government had closed its embassy in Pretoria and all other US government facilities for two days last month because intelligence agencies had intercepted a call from Khayelitsha to the al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab Islamist extremist terror group in Somalia, discussing a plot to blow up American interests.<br /><br />This was apparently to be in retaliation for the US military killing of an Al-Shabaab commander in southern Somalia. The US suspected the commander of having played a role in the fatal bombing of US embassies in Nairobi and Dar el Salaam in 1998.<br /><br />The sources added that the efforts by local intelligence agencies to trace the Cape Town Somalis was disrupted when police commissioner Bheki Cele went on national television to say that the country's intelligence structures<br />were on top of the situation. This prompted the Somalis to go further underground.<br /><br />Solomon said today that he had been trying to warn authorities for some time about the threat of terrorist action during the World Cup.<br /><br />He said international policing agency Interpol had already warned of such a threat but the South African intelligence services did not seem to be listening.<br /><br />"Our intelligence services are extremely politicised," Solomon said, adding that they would rather spy on investigative journalists to discover their sources than spy on potential terrorists.<br /><br />"When I interact with our counter-intelligence people, they are more concerned about the Boeremag than al-Qaeda... But they are acting from an ideological perspective which is fundamentally out of sync with reality."<br /><br />Solomon pointed to several instances where he said the local intelligence and security leadership had ignored potential terrorist threats for ideological reasons. He said the Pakistan government was convinced that two South Africans arrested in Pakistan after a gunfight<br />between security forces and al-Qaeda elements a few years ago were linked to al-Qaeda.<br /><br />But they had simply been released on their return to South Africa. This also happened to two South Africans arrested in Uganda more recently.<br /><br />"Everyone outside this country seems to know who is threatening South Africa. We must not think we are protected because we are far away. Often these things have nothing to do with South Africa. They are just an opportunity to attack America."<br /><br />Other sources said that Somali terrorists devised the strategy to take on the US in South Africa because it was easier than fighting the superpower in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia.<br /><br />NIA spokeswoman Lorna Daniels refused to comment on the weekend reports.<br /><br />A source quoted in the Weekend Argus said: "What has been established is that the Cape guys are linked to al-Qaeda cells in Somalia, who are connected to the group in Afghanistan. We have established that most al-Qaeda operatives are relocating from Afghanistan to Pakistan, attracted by increased lawlessness in Pakistan.<br /><br />"Our information is that there is a trail that links Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and, most interestingly, Mozambique where Somalis have formed an anti-US cell already. The interception revealed that these people plan to move en masse from Mozambique to here (SA) in 2010 to attack American interests. Their point is that SA is not a target, but if South Africans are caught in the crossfire, then that would be unfortunate.<br /><br />"Part of the intercepted conversations are on how America was stronger elsewhere but could be vulnerable here in South Africa."<br /><br />This in spite of the US boosting security at its new premises in Sandton and Pretoria.<br /><br />US embassy spokeswoman Sharon Hudson-Dean refused to comment on the threat, saying: "We do not comment on intelligence matters."<br /><br />An NIA official said yesterday: "This is classified information. If you publish it, this will jeopardise an operation already under way." However, the source said Cele had already said publicly that intelligence officers were on the track of the extremists.<br /><br />"I do not mean to be alarmist, but the US was right to take these people seriously because, we now know that they have links with shady characters who have access to old military hardware in Eastern Europe," said the source.</span></p>

This followed years of warnings and ultimately affected hundreds of thousands of South Africans," Eisenberg said.<br /><br />The report, published on the <a class="tenred" href="http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/crt/2008/122412.htm">US state department's website</a> at the end of last month, comes just under 400 days before South Africa is set to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup.<br /><br />"Border security challenges, socio-cultural attitudes, and document fraud negatively affected the [SA] government's ability and efforts to pursue and intervene in counter-terrorism initiatives.<br /><br />"South African identity and travel documents generally included good security measures, but because of poor administration, lack of institutional capacity, and corruption within the department of home affairs, which is responsible for immigration services, thousands of bona fide South African identity cards, passports, and work/residence permits were fraudulently issued," the report states.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#999999;">Opportunity for Zuma govt</span></strong><br /><br />Eisenberg said <a class="twelvered" href="http://www.whoswhosa.co.za/Pages/profilefull.aspx?IndID=927" target="_blank">Jacob Zuma</a>'s new government now had an opportunity to appoint a competent minister to the portfolio.<br /><br />"Minister [Nosiviwe] Mapisa-Nqakula has held office since 2004, and has been an abysmal failure and a national embarrassment.<br /><br />"A re-education needs to take place at home affairs, with competency tests compulsory for all officials.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#999999;">Consider Buthelezi to head dept</span></strong><br /><br />"According to home affairs director general <a class="twelvered" href="http://www.whoswhosa.co.za/Pages/profilefull.aspx?IndID=1866" target="_blank">Mavuso Msimang</a>, <strong><span style="color:#990000;">70% of senior home affairs officials failed their tests last year</span></strong>, but his department was unsure as to how to tackle the issue."</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"><br />Eisenberg called on government to consider Inkatha Freedom Party leader <a class="twelvered" href="http://www.whoswhosa.co.za/Pages/profilefull.aspx?IndID=898" target="_blank">Mangosuthu Buthelezi</a> to head the department. </span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"><br />"[He] has a proven 10-year track record and understands how the system should work effectively to protect and regulate the interests of the inhabitants of South Africa, in respect of their individual status, identity and specific rights and powers," he said.<br /><br />The US report also contained an entry on Zimbabwe.<br /><br />"Zimbabwe's continued economic decline... has had a detrimental impact on local law enforcement and national security elements responsible for implementing and co-ordinating counter-terrorism efforts," it states.<br /><br />Home affairs spokesman Thabo Mokgola said the department would respond once it had studied the report.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"></span></p><br /></span>

He grasped his hand with two hands, and he's taller than King Abdullah," an anonymous Obama aide told Politico.<br /><br />The aide made the assertion despite a video showing Obama bending almost to a 45 degree angle as he met King Abdullah.<br /><br />And Politico notes that the Arab press have reported on the "bow" — with favorable reviews.<br /><br />The occasion may mark the first time a U.S. president has bowed to a foreign potentate.<br /><br />Look at it for yourself. The day before Obama took the oath of office, British newspapers reported the deaths of up to 40 terrorists in Algeria from the "Black Death" – the Plague. </span></strong><br /><br />The London Sun reported that the terrorists died "horribly" at a forest training camp in Algeria. The terrorists were members of AQLIM, al-Qaida in the Land of Maghreb, whom the Sun identified as the largest and most powerful al-Qaida group outside the Middle East.<br /><br />Somewhat cheerfully, the paper noted that al-Qaida chiefs are worried that the Plague might have infected other terrorist cells.<br /><br />On a less cheery note is the possibility that the disease was passed on in weaponized form to other cells, or worse. Bubonic Plague is spread by bites from infected rat fleas. On the other hand, the Pneumonic Plague is more dangerous because it is an airborne bacterium that is spread like the flu.<br /><br />The fact that these terrorists all died from Pneumonic Plague is therefore even more significant and terrifying. But if they had, they wouldn't have recommended closing Gitmo first – without any workable plan to prevent the release of these unrepentant, self-confessed terrorists afterwards. "Hundreds more have 'disappeared.' Libya has no independent NGOs and the government tightly controls all forms of public expression."<br /><br />The North African country was involved in the 1988 downing of a Pan-Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland. All 259 people on board the flight from Heathrow to New York were killed when a bomb exploded. Another 11 people died on the ground. I was rather going to be shot than dragged off somewhere terrible and raped," she said.<br /><br />The gunmen are believed to have returned hours later to attack another homeowner in the same complex where they held him and his family up, robbing them of jewellery, money and cellphones.<br /><br />The gang, according to local community police forum members and police sources, is also believed to be responsible for the attack on Neels Kruger and his children during the early hours of Tuesday morning.<br /><br />The gunmen surprised Kruger's children as they were saying goodbye to friends.<br /><br />Opening fire on Kruger's children when one of their friends spotted them, the gunmen chased their victims into their Spitfire Street home where they continued firing indiscriminately before fleeing empty-handed when the house alarm was sounded.<br /><br />Security guards who spotted the robbers fleeing along the R21 were forced to abandon their chase when the gunmen shot out their vehicle's tyres.<br /><br />Less than 24 hours before the attack on the Kruger family, two gunmen, who may be involved in the other attacks, attacked a domestic worker in her Collyer Avenue home during the early hours of Monday morning taking turns to repeatedly rape her at gunpoint.<br /><br />Bosch's husband Christo, who managed to hide his children under blankets as the attackers rampaged through his house, said his family was terrified.<br /><br />"These guys shoot without asking any questions. They don't care whether you live or die," he said describing how his wife had pleaded with them not to shoot her.<br /><br />He said the gunmen had surprised them as Smit was leaving.<br /><br />"As he opened the door they opened fire. They just began shooting," he said, adding that Smit was in a critical condition in Steve Biko Hospital, while his wife was recovering in Unitas Hospital.<br /><br />Neels Kruger, describing how his children fled for their lives as the gunmen chased after them, said what had happened was frightening.<br /><br />Recalling how the bullets narrowly missed hitting them, he said: "It is only by the grace of God that we are alive. This group is doing exactly the same work as the Mlaba camp was alleged to be doing,” said Mncwango.<br /><br />He said members of the Mlaba camp were arrested because of their affiliation to the IFP. “Yet police are turning a blind eye to this camp because they are affiliated to the ANC.”<br /><br />“I am very disappointed with the manner in which police are acting. They are allowing themselves to be used as pawns for the ruling party and this is precisely what the apartheid government did -- use the police for their own political ends.”<br /><br />In August, 452 people were arrested at Camp Mlaba near the Hluhluwe-Mfolozi game reserve.<br /><br />The members of that camp, said to be affiliated to the IFP’s former self-defence units, were charged with contravening the Criminal Law Second Amendment Act of 1992, which prohibits the training of people for “the conducting of any military, paramilitary or similar operation”.<br /><br />ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said he was aware of the camp, but denied allegations of ANC involvement.<br /><br />“Even though those people are claiming to be ANC, they are not. We did not create that camp,” he said.<br /><br />Mchunu said he visited the camp in March last year.<br /><br />“We found that somebody was training and recruiting these guys, but it was not the ANC. We also found that the vast majority of them did not qualify for the military, even though they claimed to be soldiers.”<br /><br />Mchunu said he had told people in the camp that the only way to join the military was to apply for military posts by filling out a form.<br /><br />Mary de Haas, a researcher and violence monitor, said those at the Vuma camp were initially trained by the IFP.<br /><br />“These guys were trained by the IFP in 2006 in an area called Macabini. They were trained under the flagship of the South African Unintegrated Forces and were linked to a well-known IFP leader.”<br /><br />In 2007, the group broke up and some of them went to Gauteng.<br /><br />“Those who remained went to Melmoth and then to Vuma. But before they went to Vuma, they joined the ANC and called themselves ANC members,” De Haas said.<br /><br />She had learnt through two independent sources that the Vuma group had been involved in conflict in he area “including the burning of homes as well as the stealing and roasting of cattle”.<br /><br />De Haas said she had written a letter to Melmoth police about the group, but “the police did not arrest the culprits”.<br /><br />Provincial police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe said: “At the Vuma camp, there is no paramilitary training going on, unlike the Mlaba camp.<br /><br />“There are at least 70 people at the Vuma camp and we are monitoring the situation there.”<br /><br />The DA’s provincial caucus leader Roger Burrows said: “Its totally unacceptable that any military or paramilitary force connected to whichever political party is being trained.<br /><br />The MEC for safety and security Bheki Cele needs to immediately stamp down on this, close these camps and charge those involved. The president’s HIV/AIDS program, principally focused on providing Africans with anti-retroviral drugs to treat the disease (1.7 million people are on the therapy), has been such a success that the program has been extended to 2015 at $48 billion. His five-year, $1.2 billion effort to combat malaria has provided 4 million insecticide-treated bed nets and 7 million drug therapies to vulnerable people.<br /><br />The Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, approved in 2000 and reauthorized in expanded form in 2004, provides trade benefits with the United States for 40 African countries that have implemented reforms to encourage economic growth. Since 2001, US exports to Africa have more than doubled to $14 billion a year, while African exports to the United States more than tripled to $67 billion, of which $3.4 billion has been in goods other than oil. Additionally, USAID has provided more than $500 million in trade capacity building for poor countries to access international markets.<br /></span><p></p>

Any sense of security no longer exists. Says <em>Benson</em> of the country’s crime:-<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><em><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“Farmers are butchered in their fields. The parks and beaches have become killing fields. Car-jackings with mind-numbing violence are a daily occurrence. The murder rate is running at 27,000 a year.”</span></strong><br /></em><br />Benson then repeats the horrifying statistics for rape, of which more will be said. These figures, he comments, “breed the kind of fear that has you leaping at shadows, jumping red lights and climbing out of bed in the middle of the night to check, yet again, that you have double-locked the doors.”<br /><br />For you to protect your home even halfway adequately, it now seems that you need to pay an ‘armed response’ security firm. But whatever you do is never enough. One black businessman told Benson that he had lost count of the numbers of his friends who had been mugged.<br /><br />Everyone is in the firing line. No social gathering can take place without horror stories being exchanged. <span style="color:#660000;">But at this point we get some hint of the censorship that hitherto has been mobilised to keep as much as possible of the truth from the public gaze (presumably an increasingly difficult task in the ever-worsening crisis engulfing the country).</span> A white security man commented on the criminal mayhem: “It’s happening to your friends, your brother, his wife, your sister, your mother,” but, <span style="color:#660000;">“it isn’t something you read in the papers or hear about on the television news any more.”</span><br /><br />Adds <em>Benson:</em> “He carried a gun, but he wasn’t fooling himself. He knew it could happen to him. In Mandela’s ‘Rainbow Nation’ the dream is running blood red.”<br /><br />Clearly, South Africa’s new ANC (African National Congress) Government is almost neurotically aware that the legitimacy of its rule is at stake here.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#000099;">Decline of a city</span></strong><br /><br /></span></span><span style="font-family:arial;"></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Nowhere is the situation worse than in <em>Johannesburg,</em> where it is exemplified in all its worst manifestations. Benson gives a graphic description of how that unhappy city has declined. Here too, he comes courageously close to modern-day heresy in giving the White Man his historic due as the true creator of South Africa’s original productive infra-structure <span style="color:#660000;">(a subject today largely taboo in a world sold on the ‘politically correct’ elevation of the non-European at the expense of the European)</span>, and also focusing on the White Man’s predicament now.<br /><br />In a striking characterisation of the city, <em>Benson</em> writes:-<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><em><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“Built on the largest seam of gold ever discovered, this was once the richest city in Africa, a gleaming steel-and-glass citadel rising out of the brown ocean of the Veld, a testament to the economic power (and perhaps the innate character? JM) of the white community that built it, but also an example of what can be achieved by hard work and individual enterprise.”</span></strong><br /></em><br />And now? “the skyscrapers are still there,” he continues, “but the people who gave them life and prosperity have gone, driven out by hordes of squatters, beggars and illegal traders who bought Mandela’s promise of a ‘better life for all’ - and demanded instant delivery.”<br /><br />He continues:-<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><em><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“Barbecues made of old oil cans blaze in the marble foyers of what used to be the headquarters of banks and airlines. There are goats tethered in hallways. Corrugated iron huts have sprung up on the once-manicured lawns.<br /><br />“This is not an environment in which any respectable business person, be they black or white, can live or work - and most have fled.”</span></strong></em><br /><br /><em>Benson</em> next proceeds to a grim and frightening account of what has been very rapid urban and social decay in the centre of a city in which I once lived and worked myself. Now, even big business is quitting a metropolis of which it was once the <em>raison d’être.</em><br /><br />The country’s flag carrier, South African Airlines, has taken refuge in the distant outer suburbs. The big mining houses (which practically built the town) and even the Stock Exchange are to follow suit. It is evident they can hardly remain in a city centre in which it is unsafe for their employees to travel to and from work. Benson also reports that the Carlton Hotel has closed and sold all its contents, and “the Holiday Inn is a deserted fortress, its 800 empty rooms protected by reinforced steel shutters.” It is as if the London Hilton, the Dorchester and our other luxury hotels were to close down because order had totally collapsed, and the city had become uninhabitable! All this is the tale of one of the world’s major cities crumbling into chaos and dereliction, perhaps one day in the not too distant future to become as defunct as ancient <em>Babylon.</em><br /><br />It is now impossible even to walk in any degree of safety to the South African Supreme Court building to get one’s case heard. The alleyways leading to it are prowled by muggers who, says Benson, “are not open to appeal.” Although the court still goes through the motions of administering the law, this has, comments Benson, “helped ease the backlog of cases” in a country where, as other commentators have noted, <span style="color:#660000;">‘affirmative action’</span> has led to the colonisation of the bench by <span style="color:#660000;">magistrates</span> who are <em><span style="color:#660000;">illiterate, incompetent, corrupt and racially and politically</span></em> biased, and routinely bail murderers and rapists back into the community to re-offend. Cases are never dealt with, crime explodes - no law, no order!<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#000099;">Fear at night</span></strong><br /></span></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:130%;">No wonder Central Johannesburg is now so much a place to avoid, especially at night. “As dusk falls,” says Benson…<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><em><span style="color:#333333;"><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“… the streets start filling with prostitutes and criminals pushing drugs, and pills that turn a black skin white - before eventually killing you (if AIDS hasn’t claimed you first; up to 10 per cent of the population is carrying the virus and three quarters of the entire health budget will soon be spent on treating the incurable).<br /><br />“You can hear the occasional sound of gunfire rolling down from Hillbrow, by cruel coincidence Johannesburg’s first integrated neighbourhood.”</span></strong><br /></span></em><br />To many, including me (who once lived in that very high-rise district), this does not seem so much of a coincidence.<br /><br />Implicitly referring to the consequences of ‘affirmative action’, Benson describes how…<br /><br /><em><span style="color:#000000;"><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“… the police keep promising to move in and clean the place up; they never do, and if they did it probably wouldn’t make any difference: the Minister in charge of so-called security recently admitted to parliament that a policeman is three times more likely to commit a serious crime than an average member of the public.”</span></strong> </span></em><br /><br />Summarising his observations of Johannesburg, Benson comments:-<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:130%;"><em><span style="color:#000000;"><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“So much for the dream. This is the reality - and it is a shocking one, worse than I had anticipated. I have seen cities abandoned in war. This is the first city I have ever seen abandoned to the barbarians in time of peace.’</span></strong><br /></span></em><br />So what of the luckless Whites, themselves abandoned amid this chaos to the consequences of ‘multiracial democracy’? This, Benson makes clear, is not only a tale of de facto displacement by conditions of social chaos which white people find utterly intolerable; this in itself has caused mass white migrations. In Johannesburg those who opt to remain in proximity to the city have retreated to its northern outer suburbs. But there is a mass movement, in effect recoiling on the old pioneer routes, back to Cape Province, the region of South Africa in which Europeans first touched land. It is estimated that in five years 80 per cent of the country’s Whites will be clustered towards the Cape.<br /><br />Even in the Cape there is now a project to establish at least one urban area, some miles into the interior outside Cape Town, which will in practice be a fortified settlement. With property priced beyond what most Blacks, and quite a few poor Whites, could possibly afford, it is, at the size of Monaco, to be protected by a 33,000-volt fence and patrolled by armed guards.<br /><br />But in addition, fearful of lawlessness, the white population is also being harassed and persecuted by the law. As Benson comments:-<br /><br /><em><strong><span style="color:#660000;">“The government has lost the battle of the streets but they have control of parliament, and they have used their power to pass legislation aimed specifically at one ethnic group.”</span></strong></em><br /><br /><span style="color:#660000;">Instead of apartheid, there is now ‘affirmative action’</span>, whereby <span style="color:#660000;">Whites</span> are <em>de jure</em> displaced from their jobs and deprived of their incomes to make way for <span style="color:#660000;">Blacks, without regard for the latter’s <em>qualifications</em> or <em>abilities,</em></span> but purely on racial grounds in order to “redress past imbalances.”<br /><br />The result? <span style="color:#660000;">Air traffic controllers</span> are now being appointed who <span style="color:#660000;">cannot read their instruments.</span> According to <span style="color:#660000;">Commissioner of Police</span> George Fivaz, <span style="color:#660000;">30,000</span> of his officers are <span style="color:#660000;">“functionally illiterate.”</span> To supplement the facts quoted by <em>Benson,</em> one may add the purging of the health services over two years ago (as also reported at the time in the <em>Daily Mail</em>, by <em>Peter Younghusband</em>, the paper’s then South African correspondent) by the Minister of Health <em>Nkosazana Zuma</em>, who replaced district surgeons and doctors with Cuban recruits competent neither in the English language nor as medical practitioners.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#000099;">Working class whites thrown on scrapheap </span></strong><br /></span></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Working class Whites are now being dumped and paid a miserable dole to make way for Africans. Benson quotes the example of a bus driver sacked after 17 years service. For blue-collar Whites, “the economic trap-door has opened beneath them and dropped them below the poverty line. Unemployed and never likely to be employed, their children ragged and barefoot, dependent on benefits of £150 a month each, which is often not paid (the social services are being ‘re-organised - and there’s a sinister phrase!). Some families can no longer afford to feed themselves.” These now rely on church soup kitchens.<br /><br />Apparently, whilst the violently racist, anti-white politician <em>Patricia De Lille</em> says that <em>Tony Blair</em> has donated £20,000 to the home for sick children for which she works, “no-one,” says Benson, “is digging in their pockets to help poor Whites. They are off the end of Mandela’s rainbow, without a pot of gold in sight.”<br /><br />The Government in the new South Africa is intolerant of opposition. According to white Democratic Party opposition leader <em>Tony Leon</em>, “they want everyone to be ‘on side’. If you criticise them - and we do vigorously - they call you neo-nazi racists” (a strange epithet considering that Leon is Jewish). It seems that even Patricia De Lille - whose Pan-Africanist Party’s slogan is <span style="color:#660000;">“One settler [i.e. white person</span><span style="color:#660000;">], one bullet”</span> - has been “battered by this accusation.” The cause? She has been taking the ANC Government and its Ministers to task for the stupendous corruption whereby they have turned themselves and their most privileged supporters into a new class of fat cats (all very typical of post-colonial Africa).<br /><br />Free school lunches promised by <em>Mandela</em> fail to reach the children; family allowances are not paid; council houses are so jerry-built they are virtually uninhabitable. But when these failures come under criticism as in the case of <em>de Lille</em> the response of the Government under the new president Mbeki is to threaten her with expulsion from parliament for being ‘racist’, and bring in legislation to outlaw criticism of a person’s ‘private life’ which might “impair their dignity.” <em>De Lille</em> asks where the money for these public projects went, and answers “into someone’s pocket.”<br /><br />There was corruption under South Africa’s <em>ancien regime</em>, as there is any country in the world under any government. But it was never, as it is today, on a scale sufficient to cause the collapse of whole areas of public administration.<br /><br />In a nutshell, then, thanks to <em>Ross Benson</em>, we now have an overview of the <span style="color:#660000;">‘New South Africa’</span> from which to take stock. </span><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="color:#660000;">What we see is a picture of vicious and exploding crime, of chaos verging on anarchy, of corruption and incompetence way beyond anything in the country’s past, and of the racial harassment and persecution of the white minority - the people who actually built the country in the first place, and without whom there would have been literally nothing for their successors to take over and bring to ruin.</span><br /><br />It is not a picture which those with their heads screwed on the right way did not predict, decades ago, as the likely outcome of majority rule - though such people were then, and would still now be, vilified as “right-wing, racist reactionaries.” or worse. Such a fate has come upon Ross Benson, who has been roundly denounced in sections of the South African media, according to a second article by correspondent David Jones, also writing from Johannesburg, published in the Mail two weeks after his own.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#000099;">Backlash </span></strong><br /></span></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;">The <em>Mail’s</em> own letters page witnessed a similar backlash of censorious intolerance in the week following the publication of <em>Benson’s</em> report. This response looked a little like a co-ordinated ‘write-in’ against <em>Benson</em> by aggrieved <span style="color:#660000;">ANC</span> supporters in Britain. The car owner, also 23, was shot once in the chest, Van der Vyver said. He died at the scene.<br /><br />She said the hijackers then drove away in the car with his woman friend inside and went to Macassar, where they parked in an open field, raped her, tied her up and and left her.<br /><br />She managed to untie herself at about 6am and ran to a nearby house, where the occupants called the police. She was taken for medical attention and trauma counselling, but was not taken to hospital.<br /><br />Van der Vyver said the woman was still too shocked to assist the police in compiling identikits of her assailants, but said one was in his 40s and the other in his 20s.</span> <p><br /></p>

They also face a charge of aggravated robbery.<br /><br />Post mortem reports handed into court indicated that both victims had many burns caused by the molten plastic burning into their skins. Raymond's clothes were also set alight by the molten plastic after the couple was trussed.<br /><br />Walked 15km to Fitch's house<br /><br />The attackers - along with a third suspect named Seya who is still being sought - decided to rob the Fitch's and walked 15km to their home, crossing several farms.<br /><br />Simon Duma confessed: "Moses and Seya kicked the window and jumped in. I followed. Moses and Seya caught them as they tried to run away and threw them down.<br /><br />"I used shoelaces to tie their hands behind their backs. They did not fight back. We shouted at them, asking where the money was and Mr Fitch said that they did not have any.<br /><br />"Mrs Fitch was thrown to the floor next to him. Moses and Seya kicked him all over his body and head. I did not try to stop them as we were all together to do the same thing.<br /><br />"He was bleeding from the head and she was woken up. Moses and Seya took her to a room and they came back with a small revolver.<br /><br />Each got R240<br /><br />"Moses got a plastic bag and lit it and started burning the plastic over Mr Fitch. His legs and upper body were burnt and his clothes also burned. Mrs Fitch was also burnt with the plastic.<br /><br />"They were not talking and we went to a spaza shop and broke the door. We took R720 and each got R240."<br /><br />The post mortem reports indicated that they died of trauma caused by blunt force. A broken tennis racket and a broken frying pan were found at the scene and it is believed that they were used in the assaults.<br /><br />They drove away in the Fitches' Mercedes Benz, taking a vest pocket revolver, a computer, a gunsafe, the money and other valuables. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.<br /><br />Judge Gregory Kruger adjourned the case to November. </span><p></p>

Ethiopia, for example, received $1.8 billion in foreign aid between 1982-85, including a large contribution from Live Aid; $1.6 billion of that, she points out, was spent on buying military equipment.<br /><br />"The money has ended up making Africa poorer and more violent because the money has been diverted towards warlords, weapons and armed invasions," she says. "The problem of Africa is corruption."<br /><br />Napoleoni says there are parallels with Burma in the aftermath of the cyclone as aid organisations appeal for donations. "What is happening in Burma is a good example. You can have the best intentions but getting the money to the people in need is very hard because you have to go through the bureaucracy. The problem is the governance. You also need expertise. What the international relief organisations are saying is, you should send people from our team who know exactly what to do in these circumstances."<br /><br />The cult of celebrity means that people who are famous for nothing more than being pop or movie stars speak out on issues they don't fully understand. "People like Bono and Bob Geldof are not ill-intentioned," she says. "But the simple fact that being a celebrity puts you in a position above everybody else is unacceptable.<br /><br />"These people don't realise they are being manipulated by politicians and others. That is the case in the relationship between Bono and [American economist] Jeffrey Sachs, who is among the people who caused the chaos of the transition of the former communist countries into free-market economics. Sachs has been trying to relaunch himself as a sort of economist celebrity so he has been linking himself to Bono.<br /><br />"Bono is repeating what he has been told about Africa. I am sure Bono hasn't got a clue about economics."<br /><br />Napoleoni, who knows Geldof as a neighbour in the London suburb of Battersea, says he told her the first Live Aid was the "worse experience of his life because he found it very difficult to control where the money went. He suddenly realised it's easy to put famous musicians together to make money but to bring the money to the people in need is another matter."<br /><br />Napoleoni adds that there is a certain amount of hypocrisy among stars linked to good causes. Nobel Peace Prize-nominated Bono and the other members of U2 were last year outed as tax-evaders for diverting their funds to the Netherlands, circumventing their democratic responsibilities to their home country of Ireland.<br /><br />And Brad Pitt, Napoleoni points out, may drive a hybrid car, but he and Angelina Jolie use a private jet. Last Wednesday, in the village of Jerera in Zaka district in the southeast of the country, a group of gunmen described as being in riot police uniform broke into an MDC office and fired on six people. Then they poured petrol over them and set them ablaze. Two died in the fire.<br /><br />A photograph of one of them, published in a local independent newspaper, was remarkably like the picture of one of the charred victims of the xenophobic violence in Johannesburg two weeks ago. Two others are in Harare hospital with 30 and 40 per cent burns respectively. The remaining two have disappeared.<br /><br />In 1963, when the black nationalist movement fighting against the white minority Rhodesian Government split, youths on either side of the divide locked people in their houses in urban townships and threw petrol bombs inside. The leader of the youth wing of one faction — the newly formed Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu), forerunner to Zanu (PF) — was a young school teacher named Robert Mugabe.<br /><br />“If you look back at the methods of Zanu (PF) since it was formed, the only one who was there from that time is the President,” Willas Madzimure, a Harare MP, said. “Which means he knows exactly how to do it.”<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#000099;">A History of Violence</span></strong><br /><br />1963 During the rebellion against white colonial rule Mr Mugabe forms the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu) as a breakaway from the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (Zapu) led by Mr Nkomo. The Government declares a state of emergency after firebombing and violence in the poor, black townships<br /><br />1975 Mr Mugabe returns from exile and restarts guerrilla war, which claimed 36,000 lives and displaced 1.5 million people. Mr Mugabe’s forces used mutilation and burning in their brutal campaign<br /><br />1979 A peace deal is brokered by the British and the first elections are agreed. Mr Mugabe’s campaign is so violent that he is threatened repeatedly with disqualification<br />1980 Mr Mugabe wins the election and forms a coalition with Zapu<br /><br />1982 Mr Mugabe sacks Mr Nkomo and cracks down on his supporters.
