An armed gang walked into a church north of Johannesburg during a service around 9.30pm and shot a man in the face. Nine armed attackers - eight men and a woman - entered the evangelical Riversong Church during Wednesday evening service and robbed the worshippers of mobile phones and cash.
For the record Riversong is situated in the vicinity of the Coca Cola Dome and Northgate Shopping Centre in the suburb of North Riding (where I dare you to visit Johannesburg, the city for softies Jeremy ... quote 'the least frightening place on earth' unquote...Clarkson was performing his stage version of Top Gear) Jeremy Clarkson says Joburg is safe, and we’re softies!
Bystanders explained to paramedics that the man had gone towards the doors (after possibly having heard a noise). When he opened up, an armed robber pushed a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
The man fell to the ground in a critical condition.
It is understood that the robbers then went inside the church and demanded cash and jewellery from the congregants.
The man was listed in critical condition in the hospital.
A 19-year-old girl was pistol-whipped by one of the robbers. She sustained head injuries and is in a stable condition
South Africa has notoriously high rates of violent crime. Over 50 people are murdered each day in the country, often during robberies. Another 50 a day are the victims of attempts on their lives.

The attack on the church comes amid a furore over the increased brazenness displayed by criminals, following the recent killings of two Catholic priests.
One was killed in North-West province after stopping for a hitchhiker. The other was found dead in a field south of Johannesburg after being robbed of his car and other possessions.
