In the apartheid era, political violence in South Africa was invariably seen in black and white. But in the wave of anti-immigrant carnage that swept the country in late May, all 62 of those killed were black. So were the tens of thousands who lost their homes. And the mobs that beat, raped, robbed and burned victims alive were black. The hatred and violence that has shaken a country that proclaims itself the Rainbow Nation.
South Africa will observe a national day of mourning on June 24 in honour of those killed in a recent wave of xenophobic violence, the government said on Friday.
At least 21 of the 62 people killed in the violence were South Africans.
Police and government officials have refused to comment on why South Africans would have been targeted in the attacks, saying investigations were continuing.
