Cape Town - A first-year student at the University of Stellenbosch was stabbed nine times as he went home from class on his second day on campus on Tuesday.

Adriaan Diedericks, 18, a BA (visual art) student, was walking through Jan Marais Park at about 17:00 on his way to Jonkershoek, where he and his sister live, when he was attacked.

A man came up to him and demanded his cellphone. A fight ensued and Adriaan was stabbed twice in his one arm, once in his other arm and under one of his lungs.

The man did not manage to take his phone.

He was admitted to Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic, where he was still in intensive care late on Tuesday.

Hospital spokesperson, Deon Lourens, said his condition was stable. "His chances of recovery are good," said Lourens.

"Adriaan was shocked and emotional... he cried when I found him about 15 minutes after the attack," said his sister Genevieve, 21, a third-year BSc biodiversity and ecology student.

"His lung collapsed and they are busy draining it," she added.

According to her, Adriaan fought back and his attacker didn't manage to rob him.

Incident 'barbaric'

Stellenbosch police station spokesperson, Captain René Matthee, said Adriaan's attacker had not yet been arrested.

Adriaan's father, Riaan Diedericks of Piketberg, described the incident as "barbaric".

"You send your child off to get an education and then things like this happen," he said.

"Even though the incident didn't happen on campus, the university is concerned about what appears to be an increase in crime in the Stellenbosch area," said Mohamed Shaikh, head of communication at the university.

"The university offers the necessary support and help to the student through the Centre for Student Counselling and Development's crisis service," he said.
