Construction of Cape Town's 2010 World Cup stadium has ground to a halt after about 1 500 workers downed tools because their employers refused to promise them a bonus in December.

Following Friday's walkout, the construction site was again deserted on Monday while worker representatives and management met behind closed doors to try to resolve the issue.

Building, Construction and Allied Workers' Union (Bcawu) regional organiser Eugenia Peter said workers were previously paid quarterly bonuses of R1 500 each after certain construction targets had been met.

"There are different targets for different parts of the stadium project and workers were paid bonuses for the first three quarters up to September.

Trouble started on Friday when the committee reported that management said no bonuses will be paid in December. Workers walked out. Management decided to close the gates because of safety concerns.

While the stadium's completion was expected by December 14, 2009, the strike meant that construction days had been lost.
