More than 30 000 of KwaZulu-Natal’s 46 000 maths pupils failed the first quarter of 2009, the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) said on Wednesday.

“We are very worried that we are heading for yet another bad matriculation pass rate,” said Sadtu provincial secretary, Mbuyiseni Mathonsi.

Sadtu said the figures came from the provincial education department.

He said the union had managed to get more than R1m from the Moses Kotane Institute to train matric maths and science teachers.

“It is shocking that 26 000 maths learners got between 0 and 29% during the first assessment.

"On top of the 26 000 pupils who failed dismally, another 6 000 maths pupils got between 30 and 39%, which is also a failing mark.”

Mathonsi said the union’s attempts to persuade the provincial department of education to implement a programme to improve the pass rate had failed.

He said 18 000 pupils had failed science.

Mathonsi said the failure rate was high because the department did not have enough qualified teachers to teach maths and science.

“We believe that the training of teachers will still help this year’s matric pupils.”

He appealed to private companies to fund the training programme, saying there was a dire need to re-skill maths and science teachers.
