Eyewitnesses have described how a motorist was punched and kicked by a gang of attackers at a petrol station in Florida Glen in western Johannesburg.

A 39-year-old electrician from nearby Albertskroon was left badly beaten after he confronted the group who were blocking traffic and playing loud music from their cars in the forecourt.

The electrician, who requested to remain anonymous, walked out of the garage's convenience store and confronted the men about their behaviour.

The owner of the filling station said the man then walked back to his car but moments later he was attacked.

"They just kicked him and dragged him. He didn't fight back," said one petrol attendant who witnessed the incident.

Another attendant who also saw the attack said the young men kicked and hit the victim before pulling him out of his car — they then continued to beat him up.

The entire attack was captured on security cameras but the officer investigating the incident has not yet collected his copy of the tape.

It is also claimed he has not followed up leads provided by the victim.

Police commented that they are looking into the case.

In 2005, Capetonian Andrew Merryweather was left partially paralysed and wheelchair bound after being attacked in a similar incident at a filling station.
