A man was killed and 22 other men were seriously injured when the bakkie they were driving in overturned on the R21 near Pretoria on Thursday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.
Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said a white Ford Ranger, overloaded with 23 men lost control on Thursday morning and overturned when a tyre burst between the Olifantsfontein and Irene off-ramps. The bakkie was on the way from Daveyton to Pretoria.
A 32-year-old man died on scene. The remaining 22 were taken to Tembisa hospital in a serious condition. Traffic in both directions was heavily affected.
A case of culpable homicide would be opened at the Olifantsfontein police station. A case of reckless or negligent driving would also be investigated.
