A 25-year-old man was killed and his 23-year-old companion was raped after being hijacked in Orkney near Potchefstroom, North West police said on Monday.
Captain Aafje Botma said the man fetched his friend from a guest house where she worked in Orkney shortly after midnight on Saturday morning.
The two bought food and stopped outside her parents' house in Orkney shortly before 1am.
At the gate a man allegedly held them up at gun point, got into the back of the car and forced them to drive away.
The suspected hijacker directed the car onto the Potchefstroom to Carletonville road. When they were about 20 kilometres away from Potchefstroom the hijacker ordered the man to stop and then shot him in the head.
The alleged gunman then ordered the woman to help him get the body out of the car, and left it in a nearby veld.
The man then got into the passenger side seat and allegedly ordered the woman to drive the car a further three kilometres, where he allegedly raped her.
Afterwards he allegedly ordered her back into the car and forced her to drive to Carletonville. At a garage she managed to escape and ran to Carletonville police where she reported the incident.
The car was found abandoned in Orkney on Sunday afternoon.
A case of murder, rape and theft of motor vehicle was being investigated.
