A 62-year-old Bloemfontein man died after being assaulted by robbers in his home, police said on Thursday.
"Two armed men approached the man in his garage as he entered his home in Heuwelsig on Wednesday evening," said Superintendent Susan Moseki.
She said they then took the man into his house and tied him up in the kitchen.
They also tied up two of his domestic workers who were in the house at the time.
"The robbers knew somehow that the man's safe was located in his bedroom. They stole the safe, which contained an amount of R100 000 and jewellery."
She said that as the robbers were about the leave his home, they assaulted the man with the butt of their gun, broke his hand, and stabbed him in his neck.
"They then fled. The domestic workers managed to get loose and contacted police.
"The old man was taken to the hospital, but he later died from his wounds."
No arrests were made and police were investigating, Moseki said. - Sapa
